The Humane Society of Calvert County Communications Plan

Situation Analysis:
In existence since 1975, the Humane Society of Calvert County has provided exceptional service
to the community for decades. As a result, the community is appreciative and supportive of the
organization (“SOMD Reader Approved,” 2021).
However, the community maintains many misconceptions about the shelter. According to Tanya
Gott, Board of Directors Vice President, there is a common misunderstanding that the Humane
Society of Calvert County receives funding from a government or national non-profit entity. In
reality, the shelter funds its operations primarily from the $350 fee charged for adopting animals.
This fee is occasionally covered by corporate sponsors or generous donors who are sympathetic
to a specific animal especially those with a traumatic past. Other sources of income are
fundraisers and charitable donations (personal communication, October 9, 2021).
Another misconception held by the community is the burden of owning an animal. Many
potential adopters cite balancing work, school, and other obligations as obstacles to being pet
owners. Additionally, many of the ownerless pets require extensive care which makes them less
attractive options to potential adopters. According to organizational leadership, all aspects of the
mission statement are being met except for the aspect of community outreach and education
(Angel Chambers and Tanya Gott, personal communication, October 9, 2021).
According to Tanya Gott, Board of Directors Vice President, the shelter employs Angel
Chambers as the Kennel Manager and eight other staff members who are part-time employees
earning minimum wage (personal communication, October 9, 2021).
While the shelter has a favorable reputation for its care and treatment of animals, the Humane
Society is involved with numerous other enrichment activities. These activities are promoted
mostly to the followers of the organization’s Facebook page (The Humane Society of Calvert
County, 2021).

Problem Statement
The challenge for the Humane Society of Calvert County is to engage and mobilize key
supporters while also dispelling notions that prevent potential pet owners from adopting.
