Background information

Enzymes are globular proteins. They increase the rate of chemical reactions.
Enzymes are specific, this means that the structure of their active site is designed
to accommodate a particular substrate. Several factors can affect the activity of
enzymes namely; enzyme concentration, temperature and pH

Discussion
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up the rate of reaction by lowering
the activation energy. Every enzyme has a specific pH at which its activity is
optimal. If an enzyme is placed under conditions that are not within the optimal
pH range, the enzyme activity will be reduced. pH 7 caused the amalyse enzymes
to speed up fastest, this is because pH 7 is the optimum pH for amalyse.
The water was heated to 35 degrees because this temperature is the optimum
temperature for enzyme activity to occur.Iodine was added used in the
experiment to test for the presence of starch

Limitations
Only pH 5-9 was used

Sources of Error:
1. The amalyse concentration was not strong so it may have had a slight effect
on the results
2. The steps were not done in the stated order thus it had

Precaution
1. Ensure that the water bath remains at 35 degrees celsisus, as shifts in the
temperature could alter the results
2. Ensure that drops of the solution are added to different wells in the
spotting tile every 20 seconds

Conclusion
the optimum pH at which an enzyme’s activity is greatest is 7
