Introduction to counseling (video)

The counselor and their client work together to achieve their goals. The video shown to us was a

good example and demonstration of how to do counseling because all the different things that

need to be applied correctly in counseling, especially the different steps on how to do it, are well

performed by Miss Adah. We can really see how the counselee feels relieved and how the

counseling session helps him.  Based on research and discussions, the number one thing to do in

counseling is to really listen, because not all the time that person needs advice or someone to talk

to, but there are times that the person just wants someone to listen to his or her problems. Active

listening is at the heart of client-centered counseling and, once mastered, offers a powerful tool,

valuable in our professional work, relationships, and personal lives (Miller & Rollnick, 2013).

As you can see on the video, the counselor did not talk that much but just more on listening to

the person, and in that way, as we can see on the video the counselee is relieve. Giving and

receiving counseling is not a one-time event; the counselor should schedule another session to

monitor the counselee's progress which is shown to us in the video in the end part before the

session ends. "Behind the discipline of good listening is a trust that it is useful for clients to

explore their own experience and perceptions" (Miller & Rollnick, 2013, p. 49). As you can see

on the video, the counselor summarizes and clarifies what the counselee is talking by first doing

the active listening. As discussed and got from sources and researchers, in giving counseling the

distance of the counselee and the counselor should need to be in distance especially if they are

into opposite sex. In the video, it is shown by the counselor. The therapeutic connection,

according to Rogers (1942), consists of warmth, responsiveness, and unconditional positive

regard. The customer is accepted as a person, and this is expressed as a sincere interest in him.

The counselor really has a welcoming face and open hands in interviewing and in giving

counseling to the student. It also demonstrates that the client is open and at ease with the setup.
