INTERVIEW REPORT

ABOUT THE INTERVIEWEE

For my psychology project I got the privilege to interview
MR.MATHEWS MATHEW who is a Counselor and has been
practicing in the field of counselling for more than 20 years.
Mr. Mathews studied Post-graduate Diploma [PGD] in Counselling
at St. Teresa's College, Ernakulam. He also completed PGD in
Journalism and Mass Communication and Public Management at
Madras Christian College. Alongside counselling he is also a social
activist and works with other people for social change in the society.

INTERVIEW BRIEF
According to Mr. Mathews realizing the need of the hour is what
made him pursue counselling as a profession. He says that
counselling was an essential and topmost priority for him.
On asking what inspired him to choose counselling he said that the
exposure and experience he had as a social activist is what inspired
him to take counselling as a profession.

Mr. Mathews believes that one of the most important traits of a

counselor should be trustworthiness. He says that a counselor who
has this trait will be able to connect with their counselee/client as
they open themselves up and trust the counselor.

Mr.Mathews thinks that one of the most common myths in the field
of counselling is that many people interpret counselling as guidance
or advice. He says that giving advice/guidance and counselling are
2 different things. Giving advice is letting people know what you
think is best for them, whereas counselling is allowing people to
explore and decide what is best for them.

When asked about how he deals with stress from his profession he
says that a dedicated counselor never faces stress as they will be
able to separate their work life from their personal life.
On asking what are the values a counselor should possess,
Mr.Mathews said that dedication is one of the topmost values a
counselor should have to work efficiently.
When asked about his difficulties as a counselor he said that the
difficulties he faced as a counselor is the unawareness of the
counselee/client. He says that if a counselee/client isn’t self aware
[sometimes also referred to as self-knowledge or introspection] that
is about understanding an individual’s own needs, desires, failings,
habits, and everything else then it is difficult for the counselor to
define the problem faced by the counselee.

On asking how he stays motivated in his work he says that the

feedback of his clients keeps him motivated in his profession.

His advice for the young learners who want to pursue counselling
as a profession is to be open to learn and understand the concept
and the meaning of ‘counselling’. He says that counselling is a
professional occupation and one of the unique ones too as in this
profession you get an honor to be invited into the heart of one who is
hurt deeply. It's a true blessing that you get to make a difference in
that individual’s life.

CONCLUSION
Through this interview I had an opportunity to understand the
perspective of a counselor. It was a great experience for me as a
student. I would like to conclude this report by sincerely thanking
Mr. Mathews Mathew for taking out his time from his busy schedule
to do this interview.

THANK YOU!!
