Counselling

 Counselling is the most important part of the guidance
program.
 Professional meaning differ from the popular
understanding of the term.
 According to stefflre (1970) Counseling is a learning-
teaching process.
 Gustad (1953) stated that “ Counselling is a learning
oriented process carried in a simple social environment.
Counseling and Related Fields

 Counseling and Psychotherapy.
 Guidance and Counseling.
 Instruction and Counseling.
 Advice and Counseling.
Principles of Counseling

 Counselling is a process. It is necessary for the counselor
to understand that Counseling is a process and slow
process. Failure to understand this will result in
annoyance and disappointment.
 Counseling is for all. Especially in school institution
counseling is meant for all the students and not only for
those who are facing problems or other exceptional
students.

Counseling is based on certain assumptions.
 Every individual in this world is capable of taking
responsibilities for his/her self.
 Every individual has a right to close his/her own
path, based on the principles of democracy.
 Counselor does not deprive the right of self choice
but simply facilitate choice. The counselor should
give due respect to the individual and accept
him/her he/she is.

 Counseling is not advice giving.
 Counseling is not thinking for Client, but thinking with
the client. Counseling is for enabling the client to do
judicious thinking.
 Counseling is not problem solving. The counselor simply
assist the person to find solution in his/her own.
 Counseling is not interviewing but conversing with the
client in order to help him/her self-understanding.

 The counselor should determine individual
differences and provide for them.
 The counselor has to prepare the client to open to
criticism including self criticism.
 The counselor act as facilitator or catalyst. He
atmosphere which is permissive and non-threatening
through his warm and accepting relationship with
the client which help the client to explore himself
and understand him/her self better.
Goals of counseling

1. Achievement of positive mental health.
2. Problem resolution.
3. Counseling for decision making.
4. Improving personal effectiveness.
5. Help change.
6. Behavior modification.
