Sydney Opera House

A) Where is it located?
The Sydney Opera House is located in Sydney, Australia.
B) Why did you choose this structure?
I chose this structure because in my opinion I really want to visit Australia and
that is the structure that I would love to see. I also think the shape of the structure
is really cool and I want to research about this.
C) What challenges were faced by the designers, builders and engineers when
planning and building the structure?
The architect had designed the structure he had wanted which had no difficulties
with. His designs had shown that he wants sails on the roof which are the same size.
He chose this design because he loved sailing. But when he sent his designs to
engineers in London, the sails on the roof had turned out to be different sizes. The
structure had not been planned out properly, as the budget was $7 Million AUSD
but turned out to be $102 Million.
D) Which forces do you think the structure has to withstand?
I think the structure has to withstand strong winds and earthquakes but that is a
very low chance.
E) What type of structure is this?
The Sydney Opera house has an interesting design. The roofs of the structure are
white and look like shells or even sails. The shells/sails are made out of a layer of
concrete and more than a million ceramic tiles which are in the shape of a chevron.
The Colosseum
A) Where is it located?
The colosseum is located in Rome, Italy.
B) Why did you choose this structure?
I chose this structure because I think it looks really cool and I wonder how they
built this and I would like to research about this. In my opinion the shape looks cool
and Rome is one place I want to visit.
C) What challenges were faced by the designers, builders and engineers when
planning and building the structure?
A challenge was how would they lift the materials to build the top floors. The
planning had no challenges.
D) Which forces do you think the structure has to withstand?
The colosseum’s other half was destroyed by the great earthquake in 1349, also
the structure is built on a less stable terrain. So I think incase of a very strong
earthquake the structure will have to withstand it. Also a lot of the structure was
destroyed by lightning and frequent earthquakes.
E) What type of structure is this?
The colosseum is an elliptical structure. It is made out of stone, concrete and tuff.
Tuff is Volcanic rocks which are soft. Romans used this material because it is
strong and tough.
