Chapter 18
Hoisting

• A hoist helps in lifting and lowering loads.

This is done using a barrel or drum around
which a rope can be wrapped.
• Hoist can be operated manually or through
electricity with a chain or a rope for a lifting
purpose.
Objectives

❖To understand the concept of dynamics of rotation

❖Draw the free body diagram to account for all the external forces
and torque moments that act on the body

❖Recognize the effect of combining a hoist drum of moment of

inertia (I) with a hanging load of mass (M) and weight W = mg.

❖Identify the unknown problems

❖Use suitable concept to solve related problem

Hoisting

❖ Comparing the formula of the force (F = ma) and the formula of

the torque (T = I𝛼), it is seen that moment of inertia (I) plays the
same part in a change of angular motion as mass (m) does in
change of linear motion.

❖ The analogy with the idea, is to regard torque as being balanced by

inertia couple (I𝛼)
Accelerated shaft

Consider a shaft carrying a rotor having a moment of inertia about

the shaft axis. If the bearing frictional torque is equivalent to 𝑇𝑓

Then:

T is Applied Torque
I is Moment of inertia
𝑻𝒇 is Friction Torque
𝜶 is direction of the motion
Shaft brought to rest

If the shaft is brought to rest by breaking toque, the friction toque

assist the braking action and must balance I..

If there is no breaking torque then only frictional torque bring the

shaft to rest.
Four case will be considered:

1. Load accelerated
2. Load rising
3. Load falling
4 Load brought to rest

• In all case the 2 equation can be set up.

The balance of torque on the drum

The balance of force on the load
Load raised with acceleration upwards
For rotation of the hoist drum the driving torque T must balance the Tf, I. and
P.r
Load falling and accelerate downwards (No
driving torque acting)

The load is allowed to fall free. Resisted only by friction, inertia

force and coupled.
Load rising (Coming to rest under a
friction only)

No Breaking torque
Load falling and be brought to rest

Consider the breaking of the drum as the load is falls.

Question
In an experiment, a hoist drum has a
diameter is 500 mm. it is used to raised
load 50 kg and coming to rest under
friction. The upward acceleration is 3
2
m/𝑠 . The friction couple is 0.35 Nm.
Find the moment of inertia of the drum.
Home-work

The 30 kg disk shown below is pin supported at its center.

Determine the number of revolutions it must make to attain an
angular velocity of 20 rad/s starting from rest. It is acted upon
by the constant force F = 10 N, which is applied to the cord
wrapped around its periphery, and a constant couple moment
T = 5 Nm. Neglect the mass of the cord in the calculations.

θ = 17.14 rads = 2.73 rev

Home-work

A hoist drum has a moment of inertia of 85 kg𝑚2

and applied torque is used to raise a lift of 1000 kg
with an upwards acceleration of 1.5 m/𝑠 2 . The drum
diameter is 1 m. Determine the power required after
accelerating for 3 seconds from rest

Power = 53. 1 kw
