AMERICAN PERIOD IN
THE PHILIPPINES
American settlement in the Philippines
began during the Spanish colonial period.
The period of American colonialization of the
Philippines was 48 years. It began with the

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY DURING
AMERICAN PERIOD
During the Spanish and American period, Science and Technology were exceptionally
prioritize. There were a lot of improvements and new inventions that were made with the
intention of improving the lives of the natives.

The Philippines was able to advance their knowledge on science and technology due to the
schools built by the Spaniards. These institutions gave their ancestors a formal education in
teaching them how to write, read, do mathematics, and study the other aspects of science.
As the years passed, universities like 'The University of Santo Tomas' were established and
continued to introduce subjects such as medicine. This led to Filipinos being interested in
researching which led to them discovering new information that would be used in the
present.
The University of Santo Tomas
was established to introduce
subjects such as medicine to
Filipinos, who were already
familiar with using plants as
medicine. This led to them
discovering new information that
would be used in the present.
Spanish and American
influence led to the creation of
scientific institutions and
increased the level of
education. Right sanitations
were introduced and advanced
methods of agriculture became
popular. Engineering was also
improved, making it easier to
build infrastructures.
The Manila School of Agriculture was established in
1887 by a royal decree to educate skilled farmers and
improve agricultural development. The education
system was changed to three, consisting of elementary,
high school, and college, and the only technology
introduced was bricks, tiles, and stones for town
planning. In later years, the Spaniards focused on The
Galleon Trade, neglecting agriculture and industrial
development.
The American regime introduced a public school
system and introduced more colleges such as
University of the Philippines and Philippine Normal
University to train teachers. College of Agriculture,
Medicine, and Liberal Arts were also established where
graduates would go abroad to train and be
professionals. The American government encouraged
young men and women to further enhance their
studies through studying in American colleges and
were financed in going there to be physicians, lawyers,
teachers, and engineers.
The Bureau of Science was formed to
study about viruses, vaccines, and
chemistry. Initially, American
scientists were the only ones to use
them, but Filipino scientists were
trained and eventually replaced
them. They performed experiments
and studied diseases, as well as
learning about the different studies
of sciences. The Americans also
aimed to change our educational
system and teach us the importance
of health and agriculture.
Studies in medicine became more and more
helpful to other people because of its
advancement. The country became more
modernized when it comes to researches and
studies about tropical diseases, agriculture, food
processing, forestry, medicine and pharmacy.
