Executive Summary
Due to the obsolescence of the iButton and supply chain delays, Roche is utilizing the VANTAGE barcode scanner
and 2D barcode labels to replace the current iButton process for product registration and inventory management.
Manufacturing has implemented the new barcode process, and it has been tested to ensure that it is functional
and works in an equivalent manner to the iButton process.

A marketing notification MN-RTD-2021-054 is available in PIM.web.

Note: This software extension does not support the use of wireless keyboards and mice. You must use wired
mouse and keyboard to ensure successful installation and intended functionality of the software.

Subject
The global pandemic has created many global supply chain challenges. Consistent with most industries, Roche has
experienced disruptions and difficulties obtaining various semiconductor products used to manufacture our
products. Roche is adapting to these challenges by qualifying alternative suppliers and alternate components
where possible.

The iButtons used to transfer and register product information for our consumable products are included among
the semiconductor parts that are at risk for a supply disruption. Our hardware and software development teams
have determined that 2D barcodes are an alternative method for transferring data and registering products. This
alternative will eliminate the supply risk associated with semiconductors. Therefore, Roche has initiated a project to
replace iButtons with 2D barcodes and the associated iButton registration wands with 2D barcode readers.

This software extension contains elements that may conflict with wireless keyboards and mice, both during
installation and use. To ensure intended functionality with this extension software, you should only use a wired
keyboard/mouse.

Instructions
These instructions must be completed in the order that they appear. Do not skip steps or complete the steps in a
different order unless the instructions specify otherwise.

Note: After installing this patch, the customer may not use a wireless mouse/keyboard. A wireless keyboard and
mouse may conflict with the use of this barcode reader and not allow customers to register reagents. They may
also interfere with installation of the software extension. Only use a wired keyboard and mouse when this software
extension is installed.

Installing and Using Hash Tools

1. Install HashTools on your own Roche computer. Refer to the topic Installing HashTools on your own
Roche computer in the Ventana System service manual (iSDoc).
2. Verify the following hash value. Refer to the topic Using HashTools in the Ventana System service
manual (iSDoc).

Installing the Barcode Scanner on the host PC

1. Locate an open USB port on the host PC.
Note: If an open USB port is not available, install a USB hub (HUB, USB 2.0, POWERED, 7 PORT SVC
(08859469001)).
2. Plug in the VANTAGE barcode reader (VANTAGE BCR - Handheld (Honeywell) (07171650001)).
3. Set up the stand and place the VANTAGE barcode reader into the stand.

Configuring the Barcode Scanner

1. Scan the following QR barcode to generally configure the barcode scanner and proceed to the next step.

2. Scan the following barcode to enable all symbologies in the barcode scanner and proceed to the next
step.

3. Scan the following barcode (QRCENA1) to enable the QR code configuration in the barcode scanner and
proceed to the next step.

4. Scan the one of the following labels, then proceed to the next step.
o BEPBEP1 label: Enable a beep when scanning a label.

o BEPBEP0 label: Disable a beep when scanning a label.

5. Scan the following test 2D label to confirm the configuration of the barcode scanner was successful. If it
does not scan, start over at step 1.

Downloading and Installing the Barcode Registration Extension

1. Download the necessary extension software (Barcode Registration Extension (09595015001)) from
PIM.web.
2. Transfer the file to the customer host PC.
3. Ensure that any instruments connected to the host are not running.
4. Exit VSS/NexES. When prompted to save a backup, choose YES.
5. Make a backup copy of the NexES folder.
6. Double-click the installer for the extension.
7. Choose Skip to installation of the Registration Extension, if the barcode scanner is configured and
installed.
o If it is not, then proceed to Installing the Barcode Scanner on the host PC and then
Configuring the Barcode Scanner.

8. Choose Next and the barcode registration extension will install. If successful, an “Installation Successful”
message will appear.

9. Choose Close and launch the VSS software.

Registering Ventana Products

1. Place the Ventana product on the workstation near the host PC.
2. Choose the wand icon on the host PC.
3. Pick up the VANTAGE Barcode Scanner and use the trigger to aim at the field of scanning, over the label.
If scanning an iButton product, close the window and navigate to the wand icon again.

Note: Discard the product package with the registration barcode once registration is complete. Re-registering a
product on a second host computer can result in inaccurate tracking of dispenses remaining in the system.

Requesting a replacement barcode for iButtons

Submit the button request form (D145411), located in PIM.web, that has been updated to include the customers
email. The new 2D barcode labels will be generated and sent out in place of the current iButton.
