Elementary school teachers have the most impact to students' English proficiency

as children to copy in their formative years. With this premise, partnered by a possibility

of English proficiency having an impact to academic performance, this study is

conducted to 3rd year BEEd students of the College of Education of Tarlac State

University during the Academic Year 2017-2018 using a descriptive correlational design.

A test was used to determine the language proficiency level of the students in terms of

grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension. The academic performance of the

students, on one hand, was described in terms of their grades in general education

subjects, professional education subjects, content course subjects and their general

weighted average from first year to third year – first semester.

The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used in determining the

correlation of the students’ language proficiency and academic performance. The

statistical result revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship for almost all
iii

the variables except for professional education subjects. However, it was further revealed

that a weak correlation is existing between the two variables.

This result implies that the respondents’ language proficiency level is related to

their academic achievement but it cannot be generally concluded as the main cause of

students’ grade increase and decrease. It is further implied that the teachers must look

into other factors that may affect the students’ academic achievement.
