The introduction of fractions is one of the learner’s first experiences with a math concept

beyond the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It is necessary that the

learners are confident in learning fraction because it served as the building block to understand

complex math skills.

Unknowingly, there are many opportunities that we encounter fraction-related tasks at

home. From cooking, ingredients were in the form of fraction and even for serving food. This

showed that learners can do fraction if real things were involved.

However, learners were confused when they faced numbers for fractions. They were afraid

once the fraction was written on the board or while looking at their textbooks. Thus, to help

learners understand more the fraction, the researcher conceptualized the research titled :

ENHANCING MULTIPLICATION ABILITY OF GRADE 6 PUPILS OF LUCBAN ELEMENTARY

SCHOOL THROUGH THE USE OF REALIA AND HAND OUTS.

Through the use of real things along with the hand outs, learning fractions was easier and

life task-related. This will made them realize also that they were doing the fractions already at their

day to day living but unaware of it.

The pretest result of in fraction of Grade 6 learners served as the baseline data. Since the teacher

found out that out of 32 only 4 learners passed the preassessment even the topic was discussed

during their Grade 5 mathematics subject, it prompted her to make a research on how to improve

the skills of learners in understanding fraction lesson. During the implementation, the researcher

discussed the fraction to the 2 group separately. Modules and lecture method was used for

learners under control group, and realia and hand outs for the experimental group. After 1 week of

discussion, post test was administered to both group. The result of the posttest was collected,

analyzed and interpreted.
