ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Action Research is a golden opportunity for learning
and self-development. I would like to express my
special thanks of gratitude to my teacher Dr.
Kalpana Thakur for her able guidance and support in
completing my research project. Her suggestions
and instructions has served as the major contributor
towards the completion of the project.
THE CONCEPT OF ACTION
RESEARCH
Man from a very long time has been struggling with the
environmental forces and trying different ways for quality
living on earth. With time he felt the need of improvement in
everything, so through different experiments and researches,
he has been trying to improve his life and things around him.
In the same way, it was felt that we need some changes in
the structure of education. And teachers are expected to
bring that change through some research. So first thing was to
solve the simple school problems and classroom problems by
evolving some scientific techniques and some other different
approaches, which will bring improvement in their practices.
Therefore, the term action research came into existence.
Various definitions of action research was given by
various thinkers which as follows:-
• Good (1959) : Action research is research used by
teachers, supervisors and administrators to
improve the quality of their decisions and actions.
• J.W. Best (1963) : Action research is focused on
the immediate application, not on the
development of theory. It has placed its emphasis
on a real problem- here and now in a local setting.
• George J. Mouly (1964) : On the spot research
aimed at the solution of an immediate problem is
generally known in education as action research.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
• To improve the practices going on in the schools.
• To remove the notion that educational research is the job of
specialists only.
• To make teachers and the education administrators research-minded.
• To develop in the practitioners the required confidence and ability to
carry out research for solving their own problems
• To make the students, teachers and the educational administrators
more conscious about their problems and immediate solutions.
• To make the school or educational personnel more cooperative and
democratic in their work.
• To make the environment of the school more conductive for effective
teaching and learning.
CHARACTERISTICS
• Action research is focused on the immediate problems and their solutions within the
available resources.
• It is not concerned with the building of theories, broad generalization and
principles.
• It aims to improve the practices of work conditions of the people who conduct such
research.
• It involves little efforts, resources and finances in comparison to fundamental or
pure researches.
• The person who conducts the research and applies its findings is the one and the
same.
• It inculcates a spirit and an ability in the practitioners to improve their practices.
• Its main purpose is to create such healthy and proper conditions and environment as
to facilitate better teaching as well as learning for the maximum welfare of the
students.
ACTION RESEARCH-
PROCEDURE
Action research for the students who do not complete the
assignments given to them or do not complete the homework
on time.
Step I

Identification and specification of the problem: While checking the academic

performance of the class 9th I found out that few students were performing low
because of not assigning their homework of English on time in spite of the fact that
I. The homework given to them was not very difficult.
II. The time duration given to them to do their homework was perfect.
III. They were not overloaded with the homework or assignments.
Now this situation put me deep into thoughts and I
further tried to explore the problem. Few questions
came into my mind.
• Why students were not completing their homework?
• Are they not worried about their low academic score?
• Are they having any trouble in their studies?
• Is their something which influenced them to not to
do their homework?
So therefore the problem identified and can be
further specified as: “Homework of english not
completed on time or assignments not assigned on
the due date by some students of 9th class.”
Step II

Listing the probable causes of problems:

The possible causes concerning the problem can be
listed as:
1. The basics of the content are not clear to students.
2. They forget to do their homework.
3. Poor time management skills or they do not have
proper schedule.
4. They do not get proper feedback on their work.
5. They find homework very boring.
6. They don’t understand the purpose of homework.
Step III

Analysis of the probable causes and formulation of action

hypothesis: “The assignments or homework given to students should
not be one size fits all, which means the homework should be of
different difficulty levels and should be assigned among students
accordingly. Teachers must ask their students to write down their
homework at some place which they frequently check, so that
homework does not escape from their mind. Students should be
taught to make a proper homework plan and about time
management. A teacher should explain the purpose of the
homework. Teachers should check the homework daily and must give
proper feedback on student’s work. Teachers should try to create the
homework more interesting by using some creativity.
Step IV

Action programme:

5. Communicate with students 5. By organizing a discussion group
to explain them the multiple or a session, where this topic will
purpose of the homework. be discussed among the students.
Step V

Evaluation of the action programme: After repeating the

cycle mentioned of action programme for the number of
different topics of different subjects in the class, the
teacher will try to know whether the students have adapted
the habit of completing their homework on time or not. For
this purpose, they will be assigned homework from their
textbooks and will be asked to submit that homework on a
specific date. On the basis of this evaluation, the hypothesis
framed will be either established or rejected.
Step VI

Follow-up and communicating the findings to others: After

the results arrive, those results can be used by the teacher for
bringing improvement is his own practices as well as in other
students. This will be beneficial for both. This will help a
student to achieve desired academic score. A teacher should
first gain opportunity to verify the results of his action
research before communicating them to others. If the results
are good, then it should be passed on to the fellow teachers
serving in the same school and in other educational institutes.
SIGNIFICANCE OF ACTION
RESEARCH IN TEACHER
EDUCATION
1. Action research dispels the fear that research is only a
job of highly qualified persons.it has caused to
develop problem awareness among the teachers and
administrators and has made them research minded
by developing a scientific and objective attitude.
2. Most of the research work done in the field of
education goes unnoticed by people engaged in this
particular field. Action research provides an
opportunity to them to test their beliefs and to take
advantage of their own experiences.
3. Action research improves the quality of teaching-learning
process without involving extra financial expenditure. It
provides solution for very simple problem of classroom and
administration.
4. Action research is a sort of cooperative enterprises that
involves teachers, administrators, supervisors, pupils,
parents etc. All join their hands to bring improvement in
education. It gives birth to cooperative feeling and develop
love and mutual understanding among the different parties.
5. The working of the present-day schools has been so
mechanical and of routine nature that the teachers fear to
take any progressive step. Action research can help in
improving such an atmosphere.

5. Read the passage carefully:-

Our country gave birth to a mighty soul and he shone like a beacon not only for India but
also for the whole world. And yet he was done to death by one of our own brothers and
compatriots. How did this happen? You might think that it was an act of madness, but that
does not explain this tragedy. It could only occur because the seed for it was sown in the
poison of hatred and enmity that spread throughout the country and affected so many of our
people. Out of that seed grew this poisonous plant. It is the duty of all of us to fight this
poison of hatred and ill-will. If we have learnt anything from Gandhiji, we must bear no ill or
enmity towards any person. The individual is not our enemy; it is the poison within him that
we must fight and which we must put an end to.
Read the above passage carefully and answer the following questions :-
I. Who is “the mighty soul "referred to in the passage?
II. Why was he done to death?
III. What do we learn from Gandhiji?
IV. What should we fight against in the individual?
V. What is the poison referred to in this passage?
