Motivational Interviewing Research Paper

Motivational Interviewing Research Paper

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is for you to develop an advanced level of knowledge regarding the
theory and practices of Motivational Interviewing (MI), and then to apply those ideas to a specific
population or situation. MI is a proven Evidence Based Practice and is the primary counseling theory
used today in the field of addiction counseling, so it is important for professionals working in this
industry to have a solid understanding of how to use and apply this approach. MI has also been
researched to be effective in other fields; including healthcare and service sectors. This entire paper is
completed in stages throughout the quarter, and has a maximum of 100 points possible.

There are four parts to this assignment and you are highly encouraged to read this entire page in detail
before starting this project.

Part One

In order to ground yourself in Motivational Interviewing theory, prior to starting this task you should do
the following:

Read the entire Motivational Interviewing Text Book

Complete the "Tour of Motivational Interviewing" online training assignment

Part Two - 10 points

Select a particular population or situation that you would like to research and learn more about how to
apply the principles of MI to. Some examples could be:

Effectiveness of MI with adolescents in inpatient treatment

Using MI to improve family involvement in Substance Use Disorder treatment

How to use MI in addiction treatment groups

Ways to use MI to build ambivalence and discrepancy in seniors abusing prescription medication

MI for Substance Use Disorder and American Indian/Indigenous Populations

These are just examples, but whatever topic you pick should be very specific and related to the addiction
counseling field. Don't go too broad or big here, but rather hone in on a specific population. You
probably should not pick a topic without doing some preliminary research to verify that there are
available articles and resources for your chosen topic. Once you have chosen your topic, and created a
general outline for your paper, send it to your instructor. See the MI Research Paper Title & Outline Due
page in order to do this.

Part Three - 25 points

Write a first draft of your paper (minimum word count of 2,000 words). Your first draft should include all
of the following elements:

A very brief introduction

A very brief overview of what aspects of MI you will be focusing on in your paper

A very brief overview of the population or situation you will be focusing on in your paper

A thorough overview of the existing scholarship and research that relates to your topic (This section
should really be the bulk of your paper)

Your own analysis of the scholarship and MI's effectiveness and or limits on your selected population or
situation

A very brief conclusion

A works-cited or bibliography page (not included in the word count)

Once you have completed a first draft, send it to your instructor for review. See the MI Research Paper
Rough Draft Due page in order to do this.

Part Four - 65 points

Review your instructor's feedback and make the necessary changes. Once you have completed the final
draft, send it to your instructor for grading. See the MI Research Paper Final Draft Due page in order to
do this.

SimCheck

SimCheck is the automated plagiarism checker used by Edmonds CC. Once you submit your paper (both
the rough draft and the final copy) SimCheck will review your document to determine how much of it is
similar to already existing published material. SimCheck will give you a similarity score based on how
much of your document matches another source. You will want your similarity score to be at zero
percent, or as very close to it as possible. You can check your score by simply waiting a few minutes after
you submit, then reopening the document. You should then see a percentage score listed on the screen.
Review the document and if you see problem, fix it and then resubmit immediately (so long as the due
date/time has not passed). I will only see the last version you submit. In order to improve your similarity
score, consider doing the following:

Make sure all direct quotes are in quotation marks. These will not count again your similarity score so
long as they are referenced. However, keep in mind that in most academic papers, you should not have
more than about 10-15% of your total paper as direct quotes.

Make sure that if you are attempting to paraphrase or synthesize someone else's work, you are clearly
doing so in your own words. SimCheck does not just catch exact word matches, but it also catches
wording that is considerably close to the original source.

Sometimes SimCheck catches items you can do nothing about. For example, your bibliography may get
picked up by SimCheck and obviously you cannot change that. Or, I have seen SimCheck catch students
for re-posting my questions in their papers as a way to show which questions they are responding to. Fix
everything you reasonable can fix, and if your score is still not at zero percentage, make sure that what
is remaining is obvious to me as an unfixable item.
