1. INTRODUCTION

Hello, my name is Joshua Challoner I am a Pre-Service teacher studying in the Atlantic

Technological University and my programme is a BSC in Education Honours in Design

Graphics and Construction, specialising in the junior cycle subjects of Wood Technology and

Graphics and the Senior Cycle subjects of Construction studies and Design communication

Graphics.

In this paper I will discuss my personal philosophy of education and its application to the

technical classroom, a philosophy of education is the branch applied or practical philosophy

concerned with the nature and aims of education and the philosophical problems arising from

educational theory and practice (Harvey siegel, 2018)

My aim is to explore my personal philosophy of education and its application to the technical

classroom and how it can change your views or ways of teaching

The key topics and heading in this essay are as follows

2.Values and Beliefs in teaching and Learning

3. Educational theory and application

4. Conclusion

5. List of references

2. VALUES AND BELIEFS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

The key element of my personal values reflect on how I teach a class of students and what I

value and believe in an of my classrooms I teach in, my first value is based of Plato’s theory

that students should be educated according to their capabilities rather than receiving the exact

same education (Logue, 2022) this value is Fairness I would like for all students to be taught

fairly this means incorporating all learning challenges into wood technology and Graphics

that is capable for all students both weak and strong and also SEN students, but challenges

students to the max of their capabilities but not beyond that,

My next value is Pride, this can also link back to Plato’s theory of pushing our students to the

best of their abilities (Logue,2022) this means that I plan on every students to take pride in

the work they do across the board of technology subjects and not be comparing there projects

to other students saying “mine could be better”, all students should take pride in their work

because it is what they have produced and that the teacher has pushed them to the best of

their abilities make this project or complete a drawing that they will take pride in and put it

on display at home for all to see. You will see this in depth in educational theory and

application

3. EDUCATIONAL THEORY & APPLICATION

In this section I am going to discuss Plato’s theory of education and its application to a

technology classroom I am also going to discuss Jean Piaget spiral theory and its application

to the practical classroom.

3.1 PLATO’S THEORY OF EDUCATION & ITS APPLICATION

Plato Believed that every student should be educated according to their capabilities rather

than receiving the exact same education (Logue,2022) this is a very valid theory to education

as students have different strengths and learning difficulties and should be taught according

to their capabilities, Plato Described Components of education such as literature,

Mathematics, History and philosophy to be the education that we receive and they remain the

same mor than 2000 years later (Logue, 2022),

When you apply Plato’s theory to the technical classroom you can be faced with many

challenges but can overcome these by looking at different approaches, for example if you

where working with a SEN student that has severe learning difficulties and sensory issue you

cant have too much noise in the room because this could set them off, so the teacher can

adapt projects for these students and making practical projects such as flower boxes and only

using hand tools and reducing the noise as much as possible,

what I believe in education is that some SEN students in Some school aren’t getting the

experience of Wood Technology which could be a fun and relaxing subject for them to take

part in, not overloading them with theory but making classes fun and exciting for them by

making projects that could be displayed proudly around the school, this also links back to

belief on Pride, taking Pride in what you design and make.

3.2 JEROME BRUNER SPIRAL THEORY & ITS APPLICATION

Jerome Bruner had many theories but one of the main theory’s that I have a keen interest in

and is very valid to the way we teach today is his spiral theory, spiral learning is a teaching

method based on the premise that a student learns more about a subject each time the topic is

reviewed or encountered. The idea is that each time a student encounters the topic the student

expands their knowledge and improves their skill level (Jack Hand, 2022)(Logue, 2022),

This theory can be applied to the practical classroom is to teach the students the topic so for

example if we where to tech a student the different types of hand tools this would be new

content and then give them a projects that is just using hand tools and repeat this over time so

for the next project you ask students to revise the topic for the next class and then they are

self-teaching using their own methods which may help them to remember so the next time

they come into a practical class they know what to do on the projects, this can also be applied

for graphics by teaching them new topics and revising all these topics in the lead up to exams

so by the time the exam comes around the students have learned new topics revised them and

have mastered them to apply in an exam situation

4. CONCLUSION

In conclusion the main aim of this philosophy statement is to show my beliefs and how to

apply them to a practical classroom my values in fairness and pride reflect on how students

should be educated to the best of their abilities, and they should take pride in what they do in

the classroom, this can help them exceed over the years and get stronger in their favourite

subjects and shouldn’t be pushed beyond their abilities because they will loose interest
