Mid-point test: Units 3 and 6

1 a Write the equation that links speed, distance and time. [1]
speed=distance/time
_______________________________________________________________________________
b On the axes below, sketch a distance/time graph for a train that:
• moves at a constant speed away from a station, and then
• stops at another station. [2]

c The diagram shows a car travelling forwards on a road.

F D

The car is getting faster.

There is a driving force, D, on the car and a force of friction, F, on the car.
Draw two arrows on the diagram to show the forces D and F.
Use your arrows to show the direction and size of these forces. [2]

2 A seesaw is balanced and in a horizontal position.

a Marcus sits on one end of the seesaw, 2.0 m from the pivot. Marcus has a weight of 500 N.
Calculate the moment caused by Marcus sitting on the seesaw. [2]
Show your working.

500x2.0=1000Nm

________________________
1000 N m
b Arun has a weight of 400 N. Arun will sit on the seesaw on the opposite side of
the pivot from Marcus.
Calculate the distance from the pivot that Arun must sit to balance the seesaw.
Show your working. [2]
400x2.0=800Nm
m=1000÷400
=2.5m

2.5
________________________ m
c The total weight of Arun, Marcus and the seesaw is 1500 N.
The base of the pivot has an area of 0.1 m2 in contact with the ground.
Calculate the pressure that the seesaw exerts on the ground with both Marcus and
Arun sitting on the seesaw. Assume that the seesaw is balanced and not moving.
Show your working. [2]
1500/0.1=15000N/m2

15000
________________________ N/m2
