WHAT IS DOWNDRIFT: Downdrift is the cumulative lowering of pitch in the course of a sentence due to
interactions among tones in a tonal language. Downdrift often occurs when the tones in successive syllables are H L
H or H L L H. Languages with downdrift manifest it in different forms, for some languages if there are series of
tones without low tone intervening _ _ _ _ will be realised on the same level, however for some they will drift
casually.
