SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL BIOLOGY I

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

A. differentiate passive transport and active transport;
B. demonstrate the mechanisms of diffusion and osmosis through laboratory activities; and
C. give real-life applications of the processes of diffusion and osmosis.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic : Transport Mechanisms
B. Sub-Topic : Passive Transport
C. Materials : Practicum lab sheet, laboratory apparatus, LCD projector, laptop
D. References
 Passive transport : Calipjo, A. et.al. (2010). Biology Second Year. Phillippines: Neo Asia
Publishing Incorporated
 Cell membrane functions: https://www.thoughtco.com/cell-membrane-373364
E. Skills to be developed : observation, describing, communication skills, critical thinking skills
F. Values to be integrated : self-discipline, respect, understanding, honesty, teamwork
III. PROCEDURE
A. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Reminders
 Checking of Attendance

B. REVIEW/ MOTIVATION
 The teacher will ask the students to tell something about the topic last meeting.
 The students will describe the plasma membrane based on previous discussion.
 The teacher will show a tea bag soaked in warm water.
 The students will tell their observations.
C. PRESENTATION
 The students will relate the tea bag to the plasma membrane of the cell.
 The students will explain cell transport based on the demonstration made by the teacher.
 The students will differentiate passive transport and passive transport based on the pictures shown
by the teacher.
 The teacher will give emphasis on the concept of passive transport, as the main topic for the day.
D. LABORATORY ACTIVITY
 The teacher will introduce the title of the laboratory activity to be performed by the students.
 The objectives and mechanics of the activity will also be presented.
 The students will be divided into seven groups. Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 will demonstrate osmosis, while
groups 5, 6, and 7 will demonstrate diffusion.
 The students will be asked to read the procedure of the activity and execute it well. They will be
given 20 minutes to perform and another 10 minutes to present the results in front.
 After 20 minutes, a representative from each group will present in front.
E. POST-LABORATORY DISCUSSION
 The students will be asked to explain the concept of diffusion based on the activity that they have
performed.
 The teacher will explain further how diffusion happens with the use of pictures.
 The students will be asked to give examples of diffusion.
 The teacher will ask the students to explain the concept of osmosis based on the activity that they
have performed using potato slices.
 The teacher will also let the students differentiate the three types of solutions: hypertonic, hypotonic,
and isotonic solutions.
 The students will give real-life applications of osmosis, as well as the products of osmosis.
F. GENERALIZATION
 The students will be asked to differentiate diffusion and osmosis.
G. APPLICATION/VALUES INTEGRATION
 The students will give the importance of cell transport to living organisms.
IV. EVALUATION
Compare diffusion and osmosis.

Basis for comparison Diffusion Osmosis

Meaning
Semipermeable membrane
Medium
Type of diffusing molecule

V. ASSIGNMENT/AGREEMENT
