Problem Statement:
The manufacturer of three beverages (Soyfresh, Lasco Lasoy,Vanilla Food Drink) advertises
their products as protein supplements. Plan and design an experiment to verify the presence
of the nutrient in three selected beverages sold at the school's canteen.

Hypothesis:If biuret solution is added to the different samples of protein supplements, the
samples will change to a mauve or purple colour.

Aim: To determine if protein is present in the three selected beverages.

Apparatus:
Test tubes, test tube holders, test tube racks, measuring cylinder, pipette, the three
beverages(Soyfresh, Lasco Lasoy,Vanilla Food Drink), Biuret Solution

Method:
1. Place 2cm3 of Soyfresh sample in a test tube.
2. Using a pipette, add the same volume of Biuret Solution to the same test tube.
3. Mix the solution by shaking the test tube side to side and allow it to stand for 5
minutes.
4. Observe any colour change.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 using the other beverage samples.
6. After the three samples are tested, record the results accordingly.

Variables:
Independent Variable: The three supplements
Dependent Variable: The colour change observed
Controlled Variable: The amount of each sample that is tested

Each sample will change to purple due to protein being present.

Limitation:
 1. The time the test tubes were kept in the water bath can be inaccurate.
2. Inaccurate measurements may alter the outcome.

Assumption:
In the test tubes, each protein supplement will dissolve completely and turn a purple or
mauve colour.
