DUE TIME: 5:00PM, 14 MARCH 2023

Question 1. (6 + 12 + 12 = 30 points)
(a) Let S2 denote the unit sphere in R3 , i.e.
S2 := {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 1}.
Show that S2 ∼ R.
(b) In class we have shown that the cardinality of the set of irrational number is c, i.e.
R \ Q = R.
Show this fact directly by constructing a bijection from R to R \ Q.
(c) Let X be a set of real numbers. If there exists a number M such that for any finite
subset A = {x1 , · · · , xn } of X there holds
n
X
xi ≤ M,

i=1
show that X is a countable set.

Question 2. (8 + 12 = 20 points)
(a) Recall that a function f : R → R is called increasing if x ≥ y implies f (x) ≥ f (y).
Show that the set of discontinuous points of any increasing function is countable.
(b) Let a, b ∈ R with a < b and let C[a, b] denote the set of all continuous functions on
the interval [a, b]. Show that the cardinality of C[a, b] is c.
