    "A" means no.


    "Myo" refers to muscle.
    "Trophic" means nourishment.

    So amyotrophic means "no muscle nourishment,” and


    when a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or
    “wastes away,".

    AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL
    SCLEROSIS (ALS)
    ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the
    brain and the spinal cord. It is known to cause stiffness of muscles, muscle
    twitching and muscle weakness, which result in difficulty speaking, swallowing
    and eventually breathing. The cause of this disease is unknown, but in some
    cases genetics may be involved. A cure for ALS has not been discovered yet.
