During the ongoing electrification works over SCR it is observed that RE agencies are
following different ways/styles of Stenciling on oHE masts which is not giving a good
appearance and also not serving the purpose of caution Boards.
To standardize the stenciling on OHE masts, the guidelines (copy enclosed) are
being
issued for implementation in future works.

1.0 Executive Summary:
Stenciling on masts/uprights plays a vital role in OHE maintenance and helps loco pilots
to locate mast number when a no. plate is damaged or when a train is dealt on single line
working. There are no detailed drawings of RDSO or CAMTECH on the detailed dimensions of
letters or digits and the distance between various parameters on mast.
An attempt has been made to standardize the dimensions of stenciling on various
masts/portals. This system was adopted in BZA-BVRM project of RVNL and was appreciated by
CRS/SCC & PCEE/SCR.

2.0 Purpose of Stenciling:

2.1 Stenciling mast location number helps in current collection test by Oliver `G’.

2.2 Stenciling of ` RL’( Rail level ) help Engineering department about the amount of
raising of track over a period of time.

2.3 Stenciling of“ y“ value of ATD helps in detecting health of ATD for OHE staff.

2.4 Stenciling of EC socket helps loco pilots in case of accidents to approach E.C. Socket to
communicate with control office.

2.5 Stenciling of implantation helps OHE staff any movement of track away or towards
mast.

3.0 Present practices on Stenciling:

3.0 There is no RDSO drawing giving location of each parameter and size of letter, size of
background band etc. Different contractors found to adopt different types of sizes of
stencils for same letter/digits. To get uniform look and give aesthetic look to OHE,
stenciling helps a lot. During CRS inspection, uniform quality of stenciling will give a
feel good factor and appreciation.
3.1 Camtech, Gwalior has tried to give location and width of background paint but size of
letters / digits is not given elaborately. Further, stenciling of Camtech adopted in MLY-
GT section found to be not appealing to foot patrolling staff.

With a view to standardize the location of each parameter on mast and size of letters &
digits etc., an attempt has been made in BZA-BVRM section of BZA division of South central
railway.
Asian emulsion paint is used for paint. Thinner is used to dip brush once in a while only.

4.0 Background Paint:

For RL, Implantation, EC socket, location number, Half tension length etc a band is made
with yellow paint. 1-2 days time is to be given for drying of paint of first coating. Second coating
to be done after first coating invariably.

5.0 Stenciling Vs Freehand writing:
Letters/digits written by an artist found to be legible, more aesthetic and durable.
Letter/digits cut with stencil found to have leakage of paint causing blur/ugly look. However,
after standardization of sizes of letters and digits, a good quality stencils cut also may help where
painters who can write with hand are not easily available.
