The article entitled “Benefits of Being a Late-Night Sleeper” written
by Nele Köstler(n.d) describes the advantages of staying awake at
night and that they are not to be belittled. The author is optimistic
and supportive towards the benefits of being a night owl.
Therefore, he has stated his perception of the benefits of being a
late-night sleeper, which are students who stay up late at night
INTRODUCTION are proven to have higher creativity compared to other students,
night owl student are proven to be more intelligent and night
owls show they have better mental strength

Firstly, students who stay up late at night are proven to have

higher creativity compared to other students. Creativity liberates
the mind, allowing a person to absorb information more easily. It
improves the efficiency with which learning is processed. This helps
night owls to fit into society better as creative people tend to be
open-minded therefore, people who stay up late can solve problems
as a group and also individually.
BP1

Besides that, night owl students are proven to be more

intelligent. Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics
and Political Science identified a link between intellect and
late-night sleeping. In his research, it has been demonstrated that the
smartest pupils sleep late in the evening, whilst individuals with low
to average IQs sleep and wake up at typical hours. Intelligence is
important since with high thinking skills, we will be able to solve
any problem in terms of life or academically. We will solve it,
slowly but surely progress to be a better person.
BP2
Last but not least, night owls show they have better mental
strength. As the saying goes, mental strength is like a fish tank. It
keeps our insanity from falling over. Having a strong mental
strength is what keeps our minds motivated. This somehow applies
to the night owl students. A study done by the University of Leige
in Belgium in the article stated that the night owls display stronger
alertness compared to morning people. This means the night owl
students can study from morning to night due to strong alertness
because they can keep wide awake for a long period.

BP3

We totally disagree with the author that late-night sleep gives

benefits to the night owl students because late-night sleep gives you
various negative impacts. Not following the 6 to 8 doctrine, a belief
where all students must sleep around 10 or 11 O’ Clock at night and
have 6 to 8 hours of sleep is lethal because an inconsistent sleep
schedule can alter our blood. According to Chris. Depner (2018)
BP4 He discovered that the simulated night shift affected as much as
10%, or 129 proteins, of the 1,129 proteins tested. Proteins that are
ordinarily more common during the day were spiking at night, and
vice versa. This can cause diabetes and irregular protein formation
towards our body. Besides that, not utilising the 6 to 8 doctrine is
unhealthy. A study has stated that if you don't get enough sleep on a
regular basis, you're more likely to develop obesity, type 2 diabetes,
high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, poor mental health,
and even early mortality. (Paruthi S, 2016). Some students may be
affected by this negative effect and it could change their life
negatively. We believe that rather than students being night owls,
they should consider of keeping their health healthy first.
In conclusion, we reaffirm our opinion that becoming a late-night
sleeper seems to have no impact on student health. We believe that
sleeping early has much more positive effects on students than
sleeping late, since late sleeping is closely associated with
hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes. Students are advised to
familiarize themselves with early sleep that brings advantages to
them. Therefore, university students’ 6 to 8 doctrine should not be
CONCLUSION abolished.
