TEST FOR URINARY PROTEIN AND GLUCOSE USING

COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE REAGENT STRIPS

Description: Urine reagent strips currently provides a simple, rapid means for
performing medically significant chemical analysis of urine including pH ,
specific gravity, protein , glucose, ketomes, nitrite, leukocytes ,blood,
bilirubin and urobilinogen.

Principle: The reagent strips consist of chemical-impregnated absorbent pads

attached to a plastic strip. A color - producing chemical reaction takes
place when the absorbent pads comes in contact with urine. The reactions
are interpreted by comparing the color produced on the color pad within
the required time frame with a chart supplied by the manufacturer. Several
colors and intensities of a color for each substance being tested appear on
the chart. By careful comparison of the colors on the chart and the strip, a
semi- quantitative value of trace, 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ can be reported.

Purposes: (Brunzel, 2013)

1. To screen urine of pregnant women for protein which is associated with cases of
pre –eclampsia and eclampsia..
2. To screen for presence of urinary tract infection.
3. To screen urine of pregnant women for presence of glucose which is associated
with gestational diabetes
4. To screen for presence of diabetes mellitus
5. Aid in the detection of renal diseases and kidney damage.
6. Used for evaluating and monitoring of renal function.

Equipment:
● 5 ml. syringe
● Small test tube
● Urine sample
● Tissue paper / disposable absorbent pad
● Urine Reagent strips
● Good source of light

Assessment:

1. Identify the client and explain the purpose of urine chemical testing for protein
and glucose.
2. Determine if client has history of pregnancy induced hypertension, gestational
diabetes from previous pregnancies or if has family history of diabetes mellitus,
hypertension and kidney disease.
3. Assess client for signs and symptoms accompanying proteinuria and glucosuria.

Evaluation:

1. Documents the result of the test and other pertinent findings based from data
obtained during the assessment of the client.

Nursing Considerations:

1. Urine reagent strips should be protected from deterioration caused by moisture,

volatile chemicals, heat and light.
2. Reagent strips are removed just prior to testing and the bottle should be resealed
immediately
3. Manufacturers recommend that the reagent strip be stored at room temperature
below 30 c but should not be refrigerated
4. Reagent strips should not be used past the expiration date
5. A visual inspection of the strip should be done each time a strip is used to detect
deterioration even though the strips may still be within the expiration date.
6. Care must be taken not to touch the strips when removing from the container.
7. Test reagents strips using positive and negative controls, a minimum of once
every 24 hours, when opening a new bottle, when there are questionnable results
and when there is concern about the integrity of the strips.
8. Interfering substances in the urine, technical carelessness and color blindness are
sources of errors when using urine reagent strips.
