What is Hapag-Lloyd?
252 vessels, 11.9 million TEU transport volume, around
14,500 employees in more than 400 offices in 137 countries.
Hapag-Lloyd is one of the top global liner shipping companies
A brief history
The company was founded in 1970 as a result of the merge of
two German companies specializing in maritime transport –
Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft
(HAPAG), founded in 1847 and Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL),
which was founded in 1856.
 Its most ambitious strategy
The company wants to achieve being emission free in 2045. To reach that, they
introduced a so-called sustainability strategy with which they want to achieve this
goal. For this, the company has different measures to try to lower their emissions.

Reporting as a tool of controlling

Several times per year Hapag Lloyd publish different types of

reports, including Financial, Sustainability, General annual,
and Investor reports. Reporting allows to evaluate the
performance of the company over
the period, comparing with previous
forecasts.
Financial control
The Group's financial control parameters for the operating
business are EBITDA and EBIT. While EBIT is an important
indicator for achieving sustainable company results, EBITDA
is an important indicator for achieving gross cash flow and is
also used as an important control parameter for investment
and financing decisions.
Financial control

EBITDA increased sharply to EUR 15.6 billion (prior year period: EUR
6.8 billion). The EBITDA margin was 58.5% (prior year period: 45.5%).
EBIT for the first nine months of 2022 was also very significantly
above the previous year‘s level of EUR 5.8 billion at EUR 14.2 billion.
Internal control system (ICS)

Hapag-Lloyd has established an internal control system (ICS) on the

basis of the internationally acknowledged framework “COSO". A
central ICS coordination framework exists for the continuous further
development and securing of the ICS. This ICS includes the
accounting-related ICS, which has following objectives:

● to decrease the risk of significant errors in accounting

● detect substantially incorrect valuations
● ensure compliance with applicable accounting regulations

- Trade, service and consortia analyzes
Controlling of operational costs and revenue components
- Simulation of service scenarios
Supervision of the cross-regional operational cost and revenue reporting
- Deriving recommendations for action
Preparation of the monthly performance reviews with the regional management
- Implementation of required processes and new reports
Preparation of cross-service results reporting Analysis and commenting on the monthly results with regard to cost development

Participation in the further development of internal processes and planning tools Support of the regions and central functions in questions of cost accounting

Ship system cost controlling of defined services: Participation in projects to optimize costs and improve results

- determination of the results for the monthly company result Monthly analysis and reporting on savings programs and synergies

- the quarterly extrapolation as well as the annual plan Working in an English speaking environment

- analysis and commenting of the results and deviations

- participation in the preparation of the quarterly / annual financial statements
