Topic: Titrimetric Methods of Analysis

Module: 2

Aim: To determine the mass of calcium carbonate in a commercial antacid tablet using a back
titration.

Apparatus:

50cm burette, Retort stand, 25cm? pipette and pipette filler, three conical flasks, micro funnel,
white tile, Bunsen burner and tripod stand, tongs, Beaker mat

Materials:

3-4 antacid tablets as required, 130 cm³ of 1M HCl (aq), 120 cm³ 0.5 M NaOH(aq),
Phenolphthalein indicator

Procedure:

1. Transfer 25cm³ of HCI using a pipette in to a conical flask.

2. Add one antacid tablet to it and warm gently until all the effervescence has ceased

3. Allow to cool for a few minutes, add three drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate with
NaOH

4. Repeat titration as many times as necessary to obtain accurate results and record your
values in table I

Results:

Final burette reading/cm³

Titre 1: 20
Titre 2: 40

Initial burette reading/cm³

Titre 1: 0
Titre 2: 90

Volume of NaOH used/cm³

Titre 1: 20
Titre 2: 20

25cm³ of antacid and HCI required 20 cm³ of NaOH in the titration

DATA ANALYSIS:

1. Calculate the number of moles of HCl in the 25cm' of the acid used 2. Find the number of
moles of NaOH used in the titration

3. How many moles of HCI reacted with the NaOH in the titration

4. How many moles of HCI reacted with the calcium carbonate in the antacid

5. Find the number of moles of calcium carbonate in the antacid

6. Determine the mass of calcium carbonate present in the antacid tablet
