Measurements

Name:_______________________________ Course & Year:___________ Time/Day:__________

Instructor: Engr. Trismegistus V. Hernando Date: ___________________

Objective: To become familiar with the measurement of the basic quantities of mechanics and to become
familiar with the recording of experimental data and taking attention with the units.

Theory:

The basic concept of mechanics are Length , Mass and Time. Every other concept in mechanics is derivable
from these three. The SI uits of these concepts are meter m, the kilogram kg, and the second,s. Definitions
of these units can be found in any physics book.

SI Units English
mks cgs
Length meter centimeter ft
mass kilogram gram slug
time second second second

Procedure:

Note: Take a picture of yourself doing the measurement.

A. Rectangular Block
1. Measure the length, width and height of the block using cm and inches.
2. Calculate the volume V = LWH and total surface area of the block TSA = 2LW + 2WH +2 LH
3. Calculate the Density of the rectangular block, assume the mass is equal to 100 g.
Density = mass/volume.
B. Closed Cylindrical Can
1. Measure the diameter d, and the height h using cm and inches
𝜋𝑑 2 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟
2. Calculate the Volume , V = 4
h or V = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ where : r = radius , r = 2
3. Calculate the Density, assume mass = 100 grams
4. Calculate the total surface area of the closed cylindrical can.
𝜋𝑑 2
TSA = 2 [ 4
] + 𝜋𝑑ℎ
