Official College Calendar Description:


This first nursing foundations course of the Practical Nurse program introduces several concepts
and processes that will be further developed and applied throughout the program. The course
introduces the learner to nursing by exploring health care in Canada, the history of nursing,
nursing theories, and the evolving role of the practical nurse. Values, ethics, legalities, and
legislation that affect nursing practice in Alberta are also introduced. The learner will relate the
roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse as outlined by the College of Practical Nurses of
Alberta and will be introduced to the role this licensing body has in regulating nursing practice.
The nursing metaparadigm framework and nursing process are explained as major concepts in
nursing. Learners explore the holistic approach to client-centred care. Critical thinking skills are
developed as the learner applies nursing knowledge to the delivery of safe, quality nursing care.

Prerequisites: Approval of the Program
Co-Requisites: HEAS 1000, HEED 1000, NCOM 1000

2. Describe the historical and contemporary roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse as a
member of the interdisciplinary health-care team.
3. Explain how nursing knowledge and nursing practice are developed through nursing theory,
nursing research, evidence-informed practice, and critical thinking.
4. Explain how the nursing metaparadigm, theories, principles, and concepts from nursing and
other professional disciplines contribute to holistic nursing practice.
5. Describe how the nurse-client relationship and cultural considerations are fundamental to
nursing practice.
6. Examine the nursing process as a critical-thinking method of organizing and delivering nursing
care.
7. Explore professionalism in nursing through values, ethics, and professional standards
8. Explore leadership in the nursing profession.
9. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse as a member of the
interdisciplinary health-care team.
10. Explore the legislation and legal standards that govern the professional practical nurse.
11. Examine the culture of safety in health care.
12. Demonstrate reflective practice for professional growth and continued competence.

Purpose:
Students are provided with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of the nursing process to
a client by writing a nursing care plan. The student will apply their knowledge and identify
assessment findings, write a nursing diagnosis with interventions and determine the best
way to evaluate the outcomes for the client.
You will be assessed on how you apply your understanding of the following general learning
outcome:
o Examine the nursing process as a critical-thinking method of organizing and
delivering nursing care
Please read all of the instructions before you begin this assignment. This assignment is done
individually.

Submission Requirements:
 This assignment must be typewritten, well-organized and utilize proper writing conventions

Application of Nursing Process – Nursing Care Plan 2
Purpose:
Students are provided with an opportunity to apply the nursing process to a client by
developing a nursing care plan. The student will prioritize the needs of a patient based upon
one of three scenarios.
You will be assessed on how you apply your understanding of the following general learning
outcomes:
o Explain how the nursing metaparadigm, theories, principles, and concepts from
nursing and other professional disciplines contribute to holistic nursing practice
o Examine the nursing process as a critical-thinking method of organizing and delivering
nursing care

Submission Requirements:
This assignment must be typewritten, well organized and utilize proper writing conventions
(see rubric).
Literature embedded throughout and properly formatted.

c. Reference page(s) per APA guidelines:
i. Minimum of three (3) references. One from a peer-reviewed academic journal not
greater than 7 years old.

 Note: Successful completion of the six self-study modules listed in the course syllabus is a
requirement to pass lab in this course.

The instructor will have grades uploaded to Moodle no later than 10 business days after
assignment is due.

How to Submit Assignments:


Submit your assignments to MyClass (Moodle).

Late Assignment Submissions:


Late assignments will be deducted 10% per day, including weekends. Exceptions will be made in
cases of illness (supported by appropriate medical documentation) or with prior arrangement with
the instructors. Applications for extension must be made in writing (including email) in advance of
the due date.

Attendance Requirements:
Lab attendance is mandatory. Learners must successfully demonstrate nursing skills learned in
this course in the lab setting. This lab consists of in class lab time as well as online learning
modules that must be completed to pass the lab component of this course. If a learner does not
receive a grade of “pass” in the guided practice lab, he/she will be required to repeat the course.

Skills of Distinction:
Upon completion of this course students will be well prepared to face the many challenges
presented to them in the healthcare field. They will gain an appreciation for interdisciplinary
collaboration. The skills and knowledge they will gain will ensure they are well prepared to deliver
safe, quality nursing care.
