Acknowledgement of Traditional Lands

Centennial is proud to be a part of a rich history of education in this province and in this city. We
acknowledge that we are on the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
and pay tribute to their legacy and the legacy of all First Peoples of Canada, as we strengthen ties with
the communities we serve and build the future through learning and through our graduates. Today the
traditional meeting place of Toronto is still home to many Indigenous People from across Turtle Island and
we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the communities that have grown in the treaty lands of
the Mississaugas. We acknowledge that we are all treaty people and accept our responsibility to honor all
our relations.

Course Description
This course introduces the beginning practical nursing student to fundamental nursing psychomotor skills
and interventions to practice basic nursing care in a clinical laboratory setting. During this course,
development of skills necessary in group work, collaboration, therapeutic communication, application of
the nursing process and basic health care are practised using scenario-based simulation exercises.
Assessment and evaluation activities will include self-reflection and evaluation, peer feedback and basic
nursing skill competency return demonstrations. Students will have the opportunity to experience nursing
care activities in the lab which simulate heath care settings.

Program Outcomes
Successful completion of this and other courses in the program culminates in the achievement of the

Evaluation Scheme
If students are unable to write a test they should immediately contact their professor or program Chair for
advice. In exceptional and well documented circumstances (e.g. unforeseen family problems, serious
illness, or death of a close family member), students may be able to write a make-up test.
THIS COURSE ADHERES TO ALL COLLEGE POLICIES (See College Calendar) 4
PNUR 105 CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Practical Nursing Clinical Applications 1

All submitted work may be reviewed for authenticity and originality utilizing Turnitin®. Students who do not
wish to have their work submitted to Turnitin® must, by the end of the second week of class,
communicate this in writing to the instructor and make mutually agreeable alternate arrangements.

When writing tests, students must be able to produce official Centennial College photo identification or
they may be refused the right to take the test or test results will be void.

Tests or assignments conducted remotely may require the use of online proctoring technology where the
student’s identification is verified and their activity is monitored and/or recorded, both audibly and visually
through remote access to the student's computer and web camera. Students must communicate in writing
to the instructor as soon as possible and prior to the test or assignment due date if they require an
alternate assessment format to explore mutually agreeable alternatives.

Program or School Policies

Practical Nursing Lab/Clinical Program Policy
Lab and Clinical Applications Attendance Policy
Attendance is mandatory for all labs, clinical orientations (school and placement), and clinical practice.
In order to provide quality practicum placements, students will be placed in a variety of healthcare
facilities and agencies in the region contracted by the college. Student practicum placements will involve
working the hours dictated by the needs of the practicum agency.
Patterns of absenteeism or inconsistent attendance and punctuality in lab and clinical will affect the
consistency of student learning, skill competency, and evaluation by the Instructor. A student who misses
lab/ clinical hours will jeopardize successful course completion.
When a student is unable to be present for lab or clinical, the student must do the following at a minimum
of one hour prior to the scheduled time:
• contact the Lab/Clinical Instructor via email and/or telephone (voicemail) and clarify the reason.
• contact the clinical unit by telephone.

THIS COURSE ADHERES TO ALL COLLEGE POLICIES (See College Calendar) 5

PNUR 105 CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Practical Nursing Clinical Applications 1

Failure to notify their Lab/Clinical Instructor and clinical unit in advance reflects a lack of accountability
and may result in a failing grade.
Evaluation Methods Policy
Grades set by the program for individual courses supersede the College grading system. A “P- Pass”
grade is required for students to achieve in all lab and clinical practice courses.
Evaluative methods used in courses in the PN program include reflective assignment(s), lab lecture
guide, performance appraisals, and checklists of “hands-on” return demonstrations in the laboratory
setting, and student clinical checklists in the clinical setting.
Return Demonstration Test Policy
Attendance is mandatory for all evaluative methods.
To participate in the return demonstration test students must provide a Centennial College photo-ID card.
Students who do not have official photo-ID will be permitted to engage in the return demonstration test
with a substitute photo-ID, but they will be required to produce photo-ID at the program or department
office within 24 hours or the next business day following the return demonstration test, or else the test
results will be void.
In order to participate, in all lab and clinical application courses in the PN program, students must be
capable of fully meeting all the criteria and components outlined in the College of Nurses of Ontario
(2012) document: Requisite Skills and Abilities for nursing practice in Ontario. Lab skills and/or clinical
client assignments/responsibilities cannot be modified, even on a temporary basis. For example, a
student who has sustained a physical injury may not modify their client assignment or responsibilities in
the clinical placement. In such case, a student must have original documentation from a Physician or
Nurse Practitioner that states he or she can participate in all physical activities required in the course. If,
at any time in the program, a student has any concerns about his/her ability to meet this requirement,
please notify the clinical instructor and success advisor immediately.
Failure on the part of the student to adhere to the following criteria will result in a grade of “F - Fail” for
that evaluative method if the student did not:
• Notify the Instructor via email in advance of the scheduled return demonstration test.
The instructor will schedule missed return demonstration on a case by case basis.
Uniform Policy
Students are to wear the PN burgundy polo shirt to lab and the PN burgundy uniform while working in
clinical areas. Uniforms are not worn when travelling to and from the college/clinical agency in
accordance with CNO Infection Prevention and Control Practice Standard (2009). Students must change
at the college/clinical agency both in the morning and before leaving at the end of the day.

PRELAB HOMEWORK AND REQUIRED PREPARATION TO PARTICIPATE IN LAB ACTIVITIES:

Students are required to prepare by completing readings and watching skills videos before attending
weekly labs in order to promote safe lab participation in a nursing role. Prelab preparation is an
expectation and responsibility for all students to support a safe learning environment and valuable peer-
to-peer feedback. Evidence of preparation includes timely completion and submission of homework
study guides and assigned weekly online quizzes before attending labs. Students who do not fulfill prelab
preparation requirements can participate in lab practice in a simulated "patient" role, but will not be
permitted to practice skills in the lab in a nursing role. Lack of preparation for weekly labs will impact the
student's ability to meet the course learning outcomes and may result in a failing (F) grade. If a student
requires clarification related to being able to meet this requirement, they should communicate with their
instructor for support and guidance.

College Policies
Students should familiarize themselves with all College Policies that cover academic matters and student
conduct.

All students and employees have the right to study and work in an environment that is free from
discrimination and harassment and promotes respect and equity. Centennial policies ensure all incidents
of harassment, discrimination, bullying and violence will be addressed and responded to accordingly.
