Dear Mainstream and Articulation Students,

Welcome to the 2023 Immunohaematology 2 (IMH200S) semester 1 course. Please email

me Hendricksehl@cput.ac.za during office hours if you have further questions after our
sessions regarding the IMH200S course – please expect a 48-hour response time due to
other CPUT courses/students I am responsible for.

It is recommended to have a 45-minute focus lecture session – the remaining IMH200S

timetabled sessions can focus on working through the tutorials in groups and/or guided by
an assigned Tutor. On a Wednesday we will be going over your answers to the tutorials –
please note that by studying the answers to the tutorials only will not sufficiently prepare you
for the assessments.

1. INTRODUCTION
The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge, insight, and skills required to
progress to the 4th year Immunohaematology specialization module and successfully write
the final 4th year Immunohaematology summative assessment. It also aims to ensure
students acquire knowledge of the concepts and laboratory techniques that are utilized in an
Immunohaematology laboratory.

2. PREREQUISITE SUBJECTS
Anatomy, Physiology and Disease, Immunology.

3. REGISTRATION/ROLES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES/PUNCTUALITY/SAFETY/ATTENDANCE
See your general study guide provided by your year coordinator.

4. ASSESSMENT POLICY AND REGULATIONS
Assessments are carried out following CPUT’s Assessment Policy which can be found in the
CPUT Academic Rules and Regulations guidebook for students as well as in the general
study guide. Dishonesty during any assessment will be viewed in a serious light and
disciplinary action will be taken. Dishonesty also includes plagiarism (see general study
guide provided by your year coordinator).

5. E-LEARNING/STUDY MATERIAL
The subject guide, student and lecturer contract and lesson plan, summarised course notes,
2 X free e-texts, practical manuals 1 & 2, pre-recorded PowerPoint presentations (lessons 1-
10) and any other relevant information/video links/articles will be available on the BlackBoard
platform under the relevant content folder.

All recommended sources are available in the library (Bellville campus); however, I have
provided two free e-texts on BlackBoard for further reading/reference if needed.

6. TEACHING STRATEGIES
 Theory/Practical/Tutorial sessions according to the lesson plan schedule
 Learner Management System (BlackBoard)
 Self-acquisition of knowledge (journal articles/video links)

7. SPECIFIED OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will be able to apply the principles of laboratory Quality
Assurance and Good Laboratory Practice.

8. KNOWLEDGEBASE
The student will interpret and integrate laboratory tests in the discipline of
Immunohaematology following statutory requirements.
 Develop independent and critical thinking
 Enhance problem-solving skills
 Enhance subject knowledge
 Enhance students’ ideas

Please note that Immunohaematology 2 sessions will not continue through the CPUT
vacation period, public holidays, and weekends. However, the Articulation Students
will be informed by their coordinator if they are required to attend sessions over a
particular weekend at CPUT, Bellville Campus.

9. ASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Participation in ALL assessments is compulsory.
The course evaluation will be using:
Year mark
Test 1=15%
Test 2=25%
Test 3=25%
Final summative assessment (Exam)=35%
These assessments contribute 50% towards the final mark.
Assessments will include questions that assess knowledge and understanding of the subject. In
addition, questions will be included that requires the ability to apply knowledge, solve problems
and evaluate.

NB: THERE WILL BE NO RE-TESTS FOR THOSE FAILING ANY ASSESSMENTS.

“Absent assessment”
Should a student be absent for an assessment, they will be given an opportunity at the end of the
semester to write an ‘absent assessment’ provided bona fide documentation is provided (see the
general study guide provided by your year coordinator).
Please note that the “absent assessment” will be set on the entire syllabus.

Final summative assessment (FSA) - Exam

- contributes 35% towards the final mark for the subject
BHSc: MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE 4
IMMUNOHAEMATOLOGY 2 STUDY GUIDE AND STUDENT/LECTURER CONTRACT 2023
To pass this FSA, the candidate must obtain a sub-minimum mark of 40%.
Should the candidate not attain a sub-minimum mark of 40% in the FSA, they will be given a re-
evaluation opportunity provided they have attained an overall mark of 45% or above. The
candidate will be notified individually via a BlackBoard email as to whether they qualify for the re-
evaluation.

NB: OVERALL FINAL MARK MUST BE 50% AND ABOVE.

A distinction is awarded for the attainment of an overall mark of 75% and above.
The FSA is comprised of one 3-hour paper. The paper will be broadly based on the entire field of
the discipline of Immunohaematology as covered in the syllabus. The student will be required to
draw on all knowledge gained to date to answer the questions. Candidates may expect a mixture
of case studies, short questions, and multiple-choice questions.
The final mark is compiled as follows:
 Year mark 50%
 FSA 50%

10.
Theory/Tutorial session
The theory session will follow the Department of Biomedical Sciences timetable. Two free e-
texts can be found on BlackBoard for further reading (no need to purchase the latest edition
of the prescribed texts).
The tutorial session will be on a Wednesday – please see the session & assessment
schedule/lesson plan on BlackBoard. Please note that your tutorial answers will not be
marked and therefore no submission of tutorial answers will be required.

Practical session
The practical session will follow the Department of Biomedical Sciences practical roster for
the Mainstream students – the start date will be announced timeously on BlackBoard.
Please note that I am not responsible for the practical groups and therefore cannot make
any changes – please consult with Ms Santos should there be any practical clashes.

The Articulation group (Cape Town and National Students full-time in the
workplace/Laboratories) will be exempted from the practical session.

I have ordered the semi-automated equipment (Johannesburg), requested fully tested blood

samples (WCBS - negative test for HIV, HBV, and HCV) and ordered reagents/kits (Bio-Rad
Switzerland) which are costly, and the Mainstream Students are required to please attend
this particular practical session (please see the session & assessment schedule/lesson plan
on BlackBoard) where you will perform an ABO and Rh typing as well as an antibody
identification test on the blood sample provided (please see your practical manuals 1 & 2 on
BlackBoard). Please read through it before attending your practical session – the Articulation
Students are required to read the practical manuals 1 & 2 as well. There will be no wet
practical exam for IMH200S, however, interpretation of results and case scenarios will be
questioned in the assessments and can include methodology (practical manuals 1 & 2).
