A gas leak at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India exposed over 500,000 people to toxic gases, resulting in thousands of deaths. Methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide plant on the night of December 2nd-3rd, 1984, in what became the worst industrial disaster in history. The gas formed as an intermediate chemical in the production of the pesticide Sevin and is highly reactive, posing risks when not properly maintained or exposed to water.

➢ The Bhopal disaster, also referred to as the Bhopal gas tragedy, was a gas leak incident
in India, considered the world’s worst industrial disaster.
➢ It occurred on the night of 2-3 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. ➢ Over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas & other chemicals. The final death toll was estimated to 3,928 approx.(According to Govt.) ➢ MIC was a major component for the production of the pesticide Sevin by the Union Carbide factory at Bhopal. ➢ Methyl amine Phosgene Methyl isocyanate ➢ THEN ➢ MIC 1- Naphthol Sevin (Final Product ) ➢ Methyl isocyanate is a colourless liquid used for making pesticides. ➢ MIC is safe when maintained properly. The chemical is highly reactive to heat. ➢ When exposed to water , the compound in MIC react with each other causing a heat reaction. ➢
