THE BONE TIKI
David Hair
Chapter 1 - Eavesdropping
Mat Douglas is waiting for his father to come home so they can go to __________________’s
tangi. Mat’s ancestry is part-_____________ (on his father’s side) and part-___________ on his
mother’s. To reflect this dual heritage, he carved a ___________ pendant for them, one side a
__________ and the other a _________ _________. Mat’s mother now lives in __________
where she works as a ______________. Mat is ______ years old and lives with his father, a

Tama Douglas doesn’t wear his half of the pendant and treats his son harshly - he is

help him; he can be stubborn and he very occasionally gets an urge to do something
_____________________- what he calls his instinct. Just before they leave, Mat retrieves the
koru pendant and puts it on while Tama gets a phone call from a Mr Puarata, who seems to
scare him. Puarata asks about documentation for a ________ _______ and demands Tama’s
support when he attends the tangi.
As they travel south to the marae, Mat thinks about Nanny Wai-aroha. He’d met her only once,
at his great-aunt _______________’s place. She had been in an _________________ for years

encouraged him to find what he’s___________ at. That was the first time Mat felt that he could

Chapter 2 - Puarata

Chapter 4 - Flight to Napier
Back at the Douglas house, Mat changes and packs a bag while Riki grabs some _______. The
phone rings but Mat doesn’t ____________ it. Just as they are leaving for _____________,
Tama, Puarata and Donna arrive. Mat is horrified at the look on his father’s face as Tama
______________ Riki. He also thinks that Donna has a gun, so he races out the back. As he
tries to get away, Puarata calls to him enticingly and he is then confronted by the huge warrior
last seen at the marae. Mat runs, knowing that if he looks back he will ________. The warrior
catches up and attacks him, grabbing both the tiki and the koru. Mat is in ______________ as
he thinks he’s lost both, but then a teenaged __________ girl with a _______ on her face, calls
out and the warrior backs off.

Chapter 5 - Pania
We were introduced to this name early in the previous chapter - there is a legend about a Maori
girl who was lured by the _________ voices of the ______ people and she ________ out to meet
them. When she tried to return to her ___________ she was ____________ into the ________
which nowlies beyond the Napier ____________________.
Now a Maori girl called Pania gives him some advice and leads him away. Mat begins to trust
her as they reach the _______________ and pass over it to the _________. When Pania finds
out that Mat wants to go to Taupo, she says he needs friends and he has some that he hasn’t
______ yet. When a ______________ starts in his head, Pania shushes it and says they should
travel north out of town. Then he should cut inland along the ______ ________ in the morning.
After walking along the beach a bit, Pania goes to get ___________, leaving Mat beside the
_________ of __________ .They travel north again, Mat until they reach the bridge that all traffic
must cross. Mat is afraid again because he knows that they will have to cross the _________ so

Pania says they must swim across. She gets him a __________________ and a
________________ to keep his gear dry and they go back a ways to avoid being seen. As the
swim across, Mat sees __________ on the bridge and he knows that she has a _______. After
they reach the north shore, Pania tells him not to be afraid, that he has stepped into a different
world which won’t let him go. She also warns him that Puarata knows where his ___________
lives and that he should avoid Taupo and go to a pa in the Waikato to get help. Finally, she
advises him on two important points - how to get rid of the whispering

in trouble.
Mat continues north alone. When he runs out of energy, he thinks of taking shelter in an ______
gun ____________________. There he has a very strange experience before falling asleep –

Chapter 6 - Kelly
Mat continues north till he reaches the Esk River, then turns inland following the river. Various
people look at him curiously. He continues until he is surrounded by farmland and high banks so
he starts to feel _____________. He makes slow time because of ___________________ in the
stream and is hungry and tired by the time Puarata’s whispering comes again. Mat quietens it by
pulling out his ________ and picturing himself _____________ a ________ in front of him.and
feels very ______________ with this triumph.
Then a girl calls to him. She has a _____ by her side. Kelly looks about 18 years old, has short
______ hair and a ____________ face. She tells him he’s reached _____________ Park where

Chapter 7 - The summoning of Toa
As Mat and Kelly leave the farms and drive into areas of forest and tussock, Mat becomes much
more _____________. He looks again at the bone tiki and decides that it is ________ and that it
was probably carved by ______________ because its features are _______________________.
Mat tells Kelly a good story about Donna because he doesn’t think she will ______________ the
____________. But then Donna’s BMW catches up with them. As Kelly attempts to escape, the
BMW ________________ right down and the VW had to _________. Kelly, Fitzy and Mat are
threatened by Donna and three men with weapons.
Mat clutches the tiki, calls out “________” and a huge surge of ____________powers through
him. Another person has arrived on the scene, a young Maori warrior who takes on Donna’s
men. He disables two before the third shoots him several times. The bullets don’t stop Wiri,
however, and he disables the shooter as he is about to ___________ ______. Donna leaves
and Wiri tells Mat he is now his to command. Mat finds out that the tiki was made from Wiri’s
_____________ _________ and that Fitzy and Wiri seem to know each other. Wiri tells them
that although he lived long ago in their world, he also sensed things _______________ him while
he was in the _______ so he knows about the modern world as well.
Kelly’s car is now out of action because _______________ had shot the ____________. They
quickly realize that three bodies lying around will eventually bring the police, so Wiri suggests
that they travel on _________. The sound of another car coming spurs them on their way, with

Chapter 8 - Through the forest
Mat was very tired as they climbed through the forest. He had been on the run now for _____
days and ____________ and so many strange things had happened. One strange thing was
how Wiri and Fitzy seemed to _________ each other. Mat woke after a nap to the smell of
________ ____________ roasting over a fire. Wiri was also cooking ________ ________ which
Kelly and Mat initially refused to eat, but then they tried one. Mat decided that Wiri looked like
any other young Maori except for certain aspects – his ___________________, his
______________________manner and his _______________ sounding accent
After Kelly and Mat tell their stories, Wiri has his turn. He was born around ___________ AD
into the __________ _______________ , a peaceful sub-tribe of the Tainui, and lived in a pa at
_______________________. He was the beloved younger son of the chief and lived a
privileged life, but was arrogant and his older brother ____________ him. Then came Puarata,
travelling as a tohunga, and the massive warrior, Tupu. Because their group lacked a tohunga,
Puarata said he would stay if Tupu defeated Wiri. And this was the result, because Tupu was
already _________ so he couldn’t be killed. Once Wiri’s body was dead, Puarata trapped his
spirit inside the tiki that he carved from Wiri’s _______________ ___________. With his two
warriors and the totem made from Wiri’s ___________, Puarata controlled and destroyed a
number of villages until defeated by another tohunga. Later he fought in the ________________
against the pakeha then moved to Auckland where he educated himself and Wiri and started to
recruit people he could make into his _______________.
Wiri has lived this half-life for ______ years, acting as Puarata’s bodyguard and obeying all
instructions to the letter. But if he was not specifically instructed not to do something, he found
he could do it. He met Wai-aroha, a very beautiful young _________, __________ and they fell
in love. But just as they were going to leave, Puarata sent _______ back into the ________. Wai
stole the tiki and hid from Puarata but was unable to call Wiri out of it; eventually she went
____________ and was shut away. So Wiri started a half-life. He was able to _________,
_________, _________, __________ but unable to ___________________. He could feel Wai
wasting away and then Puarata coming but was amazed that ________ took the tiki and was
able to call him out.
During the night, Mat woke to find Fitzy gone and Wiri talking with a strange creature who looked
exactly like the _____________ version of figures Maori ____________ put on _________ in
________________ houses. It had black leather skin and a rank smell.

Chapter 9 - Taupo
The four travellers continue on through the forest and over the hills. Wiri warns them that their
path was used by ____ ___________, a Maori war-leader, so they need to be careful. Mat
thinks this is weird because he died _______________ ______ Mat enjoys talking with Kelly as
they go because in his life he hasn’t had much ____________ to _________ with ________.
But with more than ____ km to go from where they left the car, it would be several days before
they reached their goal. When they reached _____________, they were able to go faster and
slept in a modern hut instead of in small _________ as they had on the previous two nights.

As they travelled on, there was a volley of ________ _________ in the distance which made Wiri
hide them, but when they met a man on horseback who looked like someone from history, Wiri
talked openly with him. He then talked with Mat about the _______ ___________ where all the
things that people believe in and remember still exist. There are people like Pania who can
cross between the two worlds, but only the dead live there.
As they travel through the forest near to the __________-__________ Road, a helicopter
carrying _________ _________ suddenly flies over them. They then see Mount Tauhara which
has a great view of Taupo, but Wiri says that ____________________ live there so they won’t
climb it at night. These creatures have ________ skin and ______ hair and their behaviour is
__________________________________________. Wiri says that their passing through the
land is bringing out creatures from the shadow world - because of his own presence, the
presence of the ______ and because _______ is particularly sensitive to it. He sees such a

creature in the night, but on waking his fear is more about ___________________________. He
knows that Puarata will be watching his mother’s house but he feels that he needs to see her, to
have her deal with ________________________________. He quarrels with Kelly about this
need to go to Taupo when she knows it’s dangerous and throws the tiki at her, but she returns it
because Wiri says Mat can do something that she can’t - _______________________________.
Near Taupo, Wiri says Mat must put him back into the tiki again because ___________________
____________________ and ________________________________. Before he goes in, he
gives Mat a sharp-edged bone _______ and tells him to protect Kelly.
Near his mother’s house, Fitzy becomes _____________ which worries Mat because he trusts
the dog’s ______________. He was also surprised when the door was _____________ and the
air in the house was ____________. He wonders if he’s been listening to his _________ instead
of his _______________. He thinks he sees his mother but the figure morphs into Donna who
grabs the tiki. Mat strikes her with the patu and he snatches up both the tiki and the
_______________. As he turns to leave, Puarata blocks his way and Mat is pulled to the floor
by __________________. But then Puarata is bitten on the ________ by Fitzy and falls down,
so Mat races past him, checks the other rooms and leaves the house after slamming the ______
in Puarata’s face. Mat, Kelly and Fitzy race away, Mat calling Wiri out of the tiki as they leave.
Wiri deals with one pursuer by ____________________________________________and a gun
shot just misses him. He suggests they go to the river and calls loudly to something that he
hopes is _____________. Soon they are being chased by Tupu so Wiri hangs back, while the
public don’t know if there’s ______________ or __________________. Wiri and Tupu fight until
the cars arrive and gunmen step out. Tama is knocked down for trying to __________________
but before the gunmen can shoot, an enormous _______________ appears out of the river.
This serpent crushes the two cars and snaps at Tupu just before Puarata calls him back inside
his talisman. Wiri throws Mat over into the river where he loses consciousness.

Chapter 14 - In Donna’s house
Mat wakes to find ______________ pleading for his help and threatening to hurt _________.
Mat realises that the __________ and the _______ _________ had gone, as were his

A soldier comes and takes Mat to the ___________________, which is _________________.

Chapter 15 - Ninety Mile Beach
After escaping from Donna’s house, the group find themselves driving in the world of
___________________. In this world, the_______________ bridge has not been built and they
have to travel around the edge of the ____________________ Harbour.
Their progress is slow because of poor _________________________. They stop at a farm
where the farmer is suspicious of them until he learns that they knew _______ _________. The
farmer and his ___________ wash, clothe and feed them all.
As they continue on their way, they find the world they are travelling in to be _______________.
By midday the ____________ is getting low so they decide to ________________ back to the
____________ world. This transportation is hard on Mat.

road and in places the land is narrow. Because of this they decide to travel along ______

On the drive up the beach Kelly remains grim as they get closer to where Wiri would become
spirit because (as is becoming more and more obvious) she ___________________.
Fitzy returns and tells them that the _____________ _____________ is already ahead of them.
Although Fitzy brings good and bad news, they know that all of them must continue to the Cape
as _______ is the only one who can touch the tiki. Fitzy tells them about how ___________ has
had to stretch defences across both _____________ and holds Mat’s dad in the real world and
his mother in Aotearoa as _________________. He has also created an energy
__________________ as a shield.
Before starting out for the Cape, Kelly wants to know about _________________. Wiri tells her
of how they met and fell in love during the 1960’s in _____________________.

Puarata rises up again and his forces re-group for an attack. From the south comes the sound of
an _________________. A car arrives with Manu, Captain Spriggs and __________

When Mat sees the state of his _______________ he collapses to the ground. It is then that the
spirit of ______________________ touches Mat’s shoulder and tells him it is time to lead a
__________. It is time to fight.
Mat lets out the first cry. Wiri and Kelly then join in, followed by Maori spirits, then __________
ghosts. Mat shouts “HE!” and they all charge the _________________ wall. They smash into the
lines of ____________, who try to flee.
Moving towards their final challenge, they find __________________ standing before the
__________________________ tree. He is holding the tiki that ________ emerged from. The
two _______________ whirl in battle. During the fight Tupu _______________ into his master,
who, to protect himself, thinks Tupu back into the tiki. This leaves Puarata unprotected. While he
tries to recall Tupu, Mat runs forward and throws the tiki. Wiri is ___________ towards the tree
by the __________-wind.
Mat looks around. Wiri has gone; the g_________ have gone; the ___________have gone.
However, the threat is not over….. ________________ rises up. He roars and reaches for Mat
with ___________________ hands.

Chapter 17 - Back from the dead
Puarata is still _________ and wants Mat more than ever. _____________ that hit him did no
damage. Suddenly a ________________ erupts through his chest and he falls to the ground.
___________ reaches out from the soil and pulls him down until all that is left is the taiaha. Wiri
has ______________ Puarata.
Standing in the tunnel to the afterlife is Wai-aroha. She calls Wiri and it is though a cord of
__________ binds them. She offers Wiri a chance at a life he should have had and promises to
wait for him. Wiri chooses _________ and Wai-aroha is gone.
