MAJ Majority of other hapū/iwi start their maramataka from Whiro, the new moon.
The lunar “count”, for them, starts at Whiro - number 1 in the second column.

LUNAR NIGHT
PHASE ENERGY ACTIVITIES & OBSERVATIONS
MAJ TWAA

Me pūmahara! A time of the Atua “Whiro”.


Be careful not to invite trouble. Stay close
to home, wānanga with whānau, talk, settle
1 16 Whiro (New Moon) your puku - good time to fast/ noho puku.
An average time in the moana and whenua.
A time to gather insights to plan forward. Be
insightful, be strategic, it’s a new period.

2 17 Tirea Me auaha! An average time, average results.


Similar to Whiro, a time to review and reflect,
3 18 Hoata discuss new learnings, set your intentions and
plan for the next month ahead. Look to the
4 19 Ōuenuku early morning moons & seas for beauty. Be
creative.
5 20 Okoro
Me tūpato! Move with caution. A time of
6 21 Tamatea Āio (1st Quarter) unpredictable behaviours and events. Draw
near to whānau. A good time for eeling, fish-
7 22 Tamatea a Ngana ing, or to gather kai moana, but be careful,
the sea may appear calm, but churns
underneath. Do safety checks at home and
8 23 Tamatea Kai-Ariki work. Avoid risk, being careless or unpre-
pared. Don’t have important discussions, if
you must – be prepared for unpredictable

Me whakaroau! An unproductive time and a

Me mataara! Everything is hidden. Be wary
of what is in front of you. Be sure as you
11 26 Huna move and do things as things maybe hidden
from you. Be aware.

Me ohaoha! Everything is available, one of


the most productive nights of the
maramataka. Share your ideas & resourc-
12 27 Mawharu es, invest, launch programmes / activities. A
time of abundance to share with others.

Me matua mōhio! Come together as whānau,
13 28 Ohua assess what has been done and what is
needed ahead. Use your insights. A time of
reflection before the high productive period.

Be knowing. Are you ready to maximise?
Me ngākau rorotu! A productive period with
a feeling of relief and appreciation. A time
15 30 Turu to dream and plan big from our knowing and
ready to move again. Be optimistic.

Me whai tikanga! Great day, everything in the
open, get to it, on the water, planting root crops,

time to travel and visit, have gratitude for those
things around you, pure ceremonies, time with

Me whakarite! Coming down from a high, the
energy is markedly different, renew and reset as

Me mahira! Resting, time out, whānau time.
Take time to organize wānanga, tend to

feeling exhausted.
Me tau! A time to be tau (settled) and feed
