ELEMENTS OF ARTS

Line - an identifiable path created by a point moving in space.

- one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction and length.

 One direction - straight line connotes and expresses emotional states or evokes emotional
responses.
 Horizontal line - expresses serenity, perfect stability.
 Vertical line - emphasizes poise, stability and confidence.
 Diagonal line - implies action, movement, instability, feelingvof unrest and uncertainty.
 Curved line - implies gradual change, direction fluidity, grave movement, serenity and stability.
 Angular line - implies abrupt directions of changes, creates tension, impresssion of chaos
confusion and conflicts.

Shapes - Shape and forms define objects in space.

- Two dimensions: Height and Width.

Value - describes the brightness or darkness of color.

Gradient is a series of values from darkest to lightness.

Form -

Space - In a work of art it refers to a feeling of depth or three dimensions.

- It can also refes to the artist's use of the areavwithin the pictures.

Negative Space - refers to the main focus of a picture

Positive Space - refers to the background

Texture- The surface quality of an object that we sense through touch hard, soft, rough, smooth, hairy,
leathery, sharp, etc.

Tactile texture- real thing; the actual way a surface feels when it is felt or touched.
Visual texture - not real thing; refers to an implied sensevof texture that the artist creates through the
use of various artistic elements.

Color - Reflected light, organized on a color wheel with 3 primary colors, 3 secondary colors and 6
intermediate colors.
