Power Plant Thermodynamics Assignment 7

Case A: Coal fired supercritical-pressure power plant

First trial using data from slide 12 and considering only 7 pre-heaters could be added

using DE-TOP instead of 9 used in the diagram in slide 12. Considering isentropic

efficiency of 90% for all turbines and pumps, maximum efficiency is 49.6%

Modifying the input values to get enhanced efficiency

Condenser pressure dropped to 1.23 kPa (ambient temperature 10 oC)

Maximum pressure and temperature for high-pressure turbine and low-pressure turbine

(i.e., using data in slide 4)

Using the maximum number of preheaters, heating feedwater to 348 oC

Gross efficiency  53%

We can only increase efficiency by adding more preheaters which is not possible using

DE-TOP2 as the maximum number is 7.

Power Plant Thermodynamics Assignment 7

Case B: AGR NPP

Using similar operating parameter as slide 176, pump and turbine isentropic efficiency
of 85%, steam generator efficiency of 100% and generator efficiency of 98%. Maximum
efficiency calculated is 41.7%, that is very close to the maximum 42% obtained for AGR
NPP.

DE-TOP is very accurate tool for calculating operating and performance measuring
parameters for Rankine cycle.
