COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course investigates the nature of the competitive global econom
y and explores how individuals and societies can
gain the infonnation they need to make appropriate economic decisio
ns. Students will learn about the principles of
microeconomics, macroeconomics, international and development
economics and apply economic models and
concepts to interpret economic infonnation, assess the validity of
statistics, and investigate marketplace dynamics.
Students will use economic inquiry and communication skills to
analyse current economic issues, make infonned
iudoments and nresent their findinll'S.

AIMS: The m group 3 aims are as follows:


• encourage the systematic and critical study of: human experi
ence and behaviour; physical, economic and
social environments; and the history and development of social and
cultural institutions
• develop in the student the capacity to identify, to analyse critica
lly and to evaluate theories, concepts and
arguments about the nature and activities of the individual and society
• enable the student to collect, describe and analyse data used
in studies of society, to test hypotheses, and to
interpret complex data and source material
• promote the appreciation of the way in which learning is releva
nt both to the culture in which the student
lives, and to the culture of other societies
• develop an awareness in the student that human attitudes and
beliefs are widely diverse and that the study of
society requires an appreciation of such diversity
• enable the student to recognize that the content and methodologi
es of the subjects in group 3 are contestable
and that their study requires the tolerance of uncertainty.
ECONOMICS AIMS: In addition, the aims of the economics syllabu

• develop an understanding of microeconomic and macroecono
mic theories and concepts and their real-world
application
• develop an appreciation of the impact on individuals and societi
es of economic interactions between nations
• develop an awareness of development issues facing nations
as they undergo the process of change.

1B ASSESSMENT OUTLINE
Internal Assessment (20%) - Students will produce a portfolio of three commentaries (800 words each) based on
articles from published news media. Each article must be based on a different section of the syllabus (Microeconomics,
Macroeconomics, and The Global Economy). This will be internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated
by the IBO.
