1.0 Introduction
There are many ways of sterilise water, both long term

and short term. In this manual we will try to explain how
our silver sterilising system works. The JOWA Ag-s is a
long term system used for storage tanks where the water
is kept for a period of time. After a contact time of 4 hours
the silver ions eliminate the bacteria and prevents re-
growth.
The JOWA Ag-S Silver Sterilizer is a well-known product in the shipping world.
Since its introduction 1970 several thousands of ships have had it installed
onboard. Sterilisation is achieved by dosing silver ions, so called oligodynamical
sterilisation into the medium. The silver ions are released by electrolysis from
two silver plates by connecting the special silver electrode unit to small current
(DC).
The Jowa Ag-S electrode unit consists of two high purity (99,99%) silver plates.
The medium passes through the centre of the electrode and between the two
silver plates. The released silver ions, following the current direction between
the plates, are forced by the media to flow out of the electrode chamber and
into the pipe system. By changing the current direction once every ten minutes
where by the anode and the cathode change place, silver ions will be released

evenly from both plates over a period of time. The periodical change of the
current also keeps the plates clean eliminating the otherwise necessary regular
cleaning procedure.
Sterilizing drinking water using silver is a very old method and has been used
frequently in many parts of the world since antiquity. Before introduction of
penicillin the silver was used in many medical products and where proved to be
effective. Today silver are used to prevent salmonella in many onshore
installations.
The concentration can be either A: 0,04 mg/l or B: 0,10 mg/l silver depending
on the ruling maritime administration.
The dose level (A or B), operation mode (auto/manual) and system status
(run/stop) is indicated by the display on the front of the control panel. The pre-
set current load is automatically maintained by the electronic control panel. This
prevents incorrect dosing. An alarm is raised when the electrode is consumed
(current does not reach the pre-set value).
An audible/visible alarm can also be fitted in the main control room to indicate
any malfunction of the unit (e.g. low flow of water, exhaustion of the anodes).
The user should measure the silver ions concentration annually. Samples
should be taken from the outlet of the storage tank(s) and at the extremity of
the system.
Care must be exercised over the collection and storage of the samples and it is
strongly recommended that the advice of a competent laboratory is sought and
followed.
Normally such a laboratory will supply full instruction and sterilised bottles.
Alternatively the concentration may be checked on a regular basis using on

board testing equipment.
The Administration should be advised of any low concentrations.

1.1 General
To obtain all the advantages from operating a JOWA Ag-Sterilizer ensure that
all users have adequate education for the equipment, ensure that the
installation is correct and ensure that the Ag-Sterilizer is maintained and
operated in accordance with the instructions in this manual. The correct
function of the equipment cannot be guaranteed if the user fails to follow these
instructions.

3.0 Disinfection of Water Onboard
3.1 Standard Installation
Read this section in Conjunction with drawing 31-0000-03-01, flow diagram.

Standard Installation’ for the Ag-S system is a vessel with a water supply
system that incorporates bunkered water and water from production plants
(either reverse osmosis and evaporation plants)
The sterilizer is installed after the pressure vessel (hydrophore tank) in a branch
line from the main water supply line. Pressure for the sterilizer is provided by
the hydrophore pump.
The sterilizer unit doses silver into the branch line. This branch line is then
directed back to the ships storage tank where the silver dose can sterilizer the
entire ships fresh water supply. See fig 3.1
The silver concentration in this branch line from the Ag-s to the storage tank is
very high. When this water comes in contact with the “newly made water” in the
storage tank the concentration will be right.
The silver must be allowed a minimum 4 hours contact time with the water in
the fresh water storage tank to have full sterilizing effect.

The valve V01 is controlled by the Ag-s and will open when the unit starts. The
water will then go through the silver chamber at the bottom and out at the top.
The flow switch FS01 will tell the system if there is a flow going through the
chamber (20 sec. Delayed).
The Ag-s unit can be controlled by remote signal. A signal from water maker
starts the Ag-s and a the Ag-s can send a signal to Water maker to stop if the
Ag-s unit stops.
The system is supplied with a timer mode to
• compensate for flow rates outside the sterilizers capacity when

bunkering water from shore
• compensate for losses of silver ions over time by periodically running
and “topping-up” the silver ion concentration.
3.2 Optional extras
The system is easily modified for non-standard special installations. JOWA AB

will give you support when you have special installation requirements.
The installation can incorporate a flow transmitter as an optional extra installed

in the water production plant line. The silver sterilizers microprocessor will
determine the correct dose of silver based on the flow signal from the
transmitter. NOTE! A flow transmitter is required if the unit is to be run in
AUTO MODE
As an extra protection a shut off valve V02 can be installed on the main pipe, to
stop the water flow from water maker. This is to avoid any non sterilised water
being produced. In this case there should also be a stop signal connected from
the Ag-s to the water maker.

4.0 Installation
4.1 Mounting
The Jowa Ag-S sterilising unit consists of a standard cabinet with all the
electronics, a sterilising electrode chamber made in high grade electro-polished
stainless steel, one shut off valve, flow setting valve, flow switch and pressure
meter.

All parts are mounted on a common polished stainless steel plate ready to be
installed on a bulkhead. (Flow switch FS01 and the valve V01 is loose supply.)
The unit has passed a work-shop test before delivery.
4.2 Piping Connections
The sterilising unit is to be connected to 15 mm pipes on the water inlet and on

the water outlet of the electrode chamber.

5.0 Operation.
5.1 Start Up
• Open inlet and outlet valves. Check for leaks.

• Check that the green (LED) lamp "Power" is shining
• The manual flow is factory set to 2.0 m3/h and the silver dosage is set to
A(0.04mg/l). The flow is the flow of “new water” from water maker/bunker
ready to be sterilised. In case the user wants to change manual flow or silver
dosage he has to change the settings set in the Settings Menu.
• To start the sterilize press YES at the start page.
• Check that solenoid valve opens when the YES button is pressed.
• Adjust the flow by adjusting the flow setting valve (approx. 35 l/m).
Note! It is important that the set value corresponds to the actual flow from
water maker or bunker, so for safety, check the flow regularly.
5.2 Operating the Menu System
When the power is turned on, the application program of the Ag-S is started.
On the display the menu system is started. The menu system consists of a
number of screens – settings, silver consumption, JOWA contact information,
status and operation mode.
You navigate in the menu system by pressing the button – UP, DOWN, YES
and NO.
5.3 Operating Modes.
MANUAL MODE - the current is set according to manual flow parameter called
ManFlow and silver dosage parameter called Dose. ManFlow is set in m3/h and
Dose is set to A or B. A corresponds to a silver dosage of 0.04 mg/l and B
corresponds to 0.10 mg/l. The “ManFlow” is the main flow from water maker or
bunker. In this mode the Ag-s can be started from the water maker via a signal
to terminal J13 (remote start) in Ag-s control box (open contact = stop and
closed contact = start).

AUTO MODE – the current is set according to the flow meter parameter called
FlowMet (litres/pulse). This parameter has to be set before the user can enable
the AUTO mode. Auto mode is controlled by a flow transmitter on water maker
line (flow transmitter optional supply).
Note: In auto mode the operator should press “yes” to start the sterilizer.
When started in auto mode the silver dose will be regulated by the pulses from
flow transmitter.
TIMER MODE –
The Ag-s can be run and paused by setting timers under the ‘settings’ menu in
manual mode
• First set the flow rate “ManFlow” in m3/h
Setting the run and pause timers, e.g. runtime is set to 30min & pausetime to 2
days, means the AG´s run for 30 min every second day
• The timer for run is “TimMa ()” and is set in minutes

Set the minutes and the timer appears in display as “TimMa(S)” [indicating that
timer is set]
Press “yes” again and the timer appears in display as “TimMa(SE)” [indicating
that timer is set and enabled]
• The timer for pause Is “TimLo ()” and is set in days

Set the number of days and the timer appears in display as “TimLo(E)”
• Return to the top menu and start the Ag-S. the display shows a count-
down in minutes indicating the value input for run time. After the timer
runs out the unit pauses according to the time set in “TimLo”
*Calculation example when the flow-rate for bunkering exceeds the AgS
capacity:
Say the amount bunkered is out of range of the Ag-S; i.e.>15m³/h.

In this case use timer mode to make-up the concentration
For example if you bunker 30m³ of water :

• you set “ManFlow” to 15m³/h (dose A)
• Then set run timer for 120 minutes. [30 /15 = 2hours]
• Set pause timer for say 1 day
• The Ag-S stops after the run time counts out and now the concentration
of silver ions in the storage tank is made-up to correct dose (for dose A)

5.4 The Menu System Display Tree
In the menu system there are several screens telling the user about its status.
In case of an error there are a number of error messages that will pop up on the
LCD.
In the figure below you can see the different screens pages of the menu
system.

Press YES to get to a sub menu where you can change settings.

To be able to change settings you have to press YES at each page. The current
value is displayed on the LCD. Next to this, the value which will be replaced by
your setting. The setting is performed by pressing the buttons UP/DOWN on
the overlay. To confirm the setting please press YES, and to cancel the
operation press NO.

5.5 Alarm List
When running the AG-Sterilizer a number of errors can occur. The alarms are
specified below.
Silver Consumption
When 80 % of the silver has been consumed this alarm is generated. The red
LED on the overlay flashes, while the following message is displayed on the
LCD.

When YES is pressed the message disappears and the menu system returns to
the first page. If the user has not replaced the electrode and reset the counter
(see Page 2 – Silver Consumption), the program will give an alarm again at 85
%, 90 %, 95 % and so on. Finally the current becomes too low and another
error message will be generated (See below).
Flow Switch
If the flow switch signals is missing for 20 seconds this alarm is generated.
When the alarm occurs the current is set to zero, the solenoid valve is closed.
The common alarm is activated and the ALARM LED is lit. At the same time the
following message is displayed.

When the user has cleared the message the AG-Sterilizer is still turned off and
a new start signal has to be set before the AG-Sterilizer starts again.
Current Level
If the current level is too low for one minute this alarm is generated. This alarm
may have different causes. For example, the water may have too low
conductivity or the silver electrode is completely consumed and has to be
replaced. When the alarm occurs the current is set to zero, the solenoid valve is
closed, common alarm is activated and the ALARM LED is lit.

Low Flow
This alarm is generated when the total flow through the main pipe is below 0.5
m3/h in AUTO mode. The following message is shown and if the flow does not
exceed 0.5 m3/h for a minute the AG-Sterilizer is stopped.

5.6 Replacement of the Electrode Unit
When the red (LED) lamp "Alarm" is shining and the alarm message ‘low
current’ is been shown the silver electrode must be replaced.
It is also important to know that the conductivity in the water can be too low to
be able to maintain the desired current (this will also generate this alarm).
Note: To avoid this you can install a JOWA re-hardening filter after water
maker. See flow diagram 31-0000-03-01
• Stop the flow by closing inlet and outlet valves

• Remove the electric plug from the electrode chamber
• Unscrew and lift out the electrode unit
• Check that the chamber is clean and free from foreign objects
• If necessary clean the chamber
• Put the new electrode unit in place an turn tight
• Put back the electric plug
• Open the inlet and outlet valves and check for leaks.
• Press "YES". The red (LED) lamp "Alarm" will cease to shine.
• Check that the green (LED) lamp "Power" is shining.
• Reset Silver Consumption and Counter, See Section 5.4.1
The sterilizer is now ready for operation.
5.7 Maintenance
Very little maintenance is required as high quality material is used. The

electrode chamber as well as the common base plate are made in polished
stainless steel and need no maintenance.
As the Jowa Ag-S Sterilizer uses pure silver in both of the electrodes and also
shifts the current direction once every ten minutes so there is no oxidation or
growth on the surface of the electrodes and no regular cleaning maintenance is
required.
