FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
B.E. (Civil) III - Semester (AICTE) (Main & Backlog) (New) Examination,
February/ March 2023

Subject: Mathematics- III

Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: (i) First question is compulsory and answer any four questions from the
remaining six questions. Each questions carries 14 Marks.
(ii) Answer to each question must be written at one place only and in the same
order as they occur in the question paper.
(iii) Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed.

1. a) Eliminate the arbitrary function 𝑓 from 𝑧 = 𝑓(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 ) to obtain a partial differential

equation.

oe
b) Classify the partial differential equation 𝑢𝑥𝑥 + 𝑥𝑢𝑦𝑦 = 0, 𝑥 < 0.
c) If 𝑋 is a random variable, the prove that 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑎𝑋 + 𝑏) = 𝑎2 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑋) where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are

-c
constants.
d) Find the mean of Binomial distribution.
e) Briefly explain 𝐹 − 𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡.
f) Solve [𝐷2 + 2𝐷𝐷′ + (𝐷′ )2 ]𝑧 = 0.
U
g) Show that the correlation coefficient is the geometric mean of regression coefficients.
O

2. a) Solve 𝑦 2 𝑝 − 𝑥𝑦𝑞 = 𝑥(𝑧 − 2𝑦).

b) Find a particular integral of [𝐷2 + 𝐷𝐷′ − 6(𝐷′ )2 ]𝑧 = sin(2𝑥 + 𝑦).

3. A tightly stretched flexible string has its ends fixed at 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = 𝑙. At time 𝑡 = 0, the
-c

string is given a shape defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑘𝑥(𝑙 − 𝑥), where 𝑘 is a constant, and then
released. Find the displacement of any point 𝑥 of the string at any time 𝑡 > 0.

4. The probability function of a discrete random variable 𝑋 is as follows:

𝑋=𝑥 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
O

𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 0 𝑘 2𝑘 2𝑘 3𝑘 𝑘 2𝑘 𝑘 + 𝑘 2 2 2

Find (i) 𝑘 (ii) 𝑃(𝑋 < 5) (iii) 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 5) (iv) 𝑃(0 < 𝑥 < 4) and (v) the distribution function
of 𝑋.

5. a) The first three moments of a distribution about the value 5 of a variable are 2,20 and 40.
Find the mean and variance of the distribution.
b) Using the method of least squares, find a straight line of the form 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 that fits
the following data.
𝑥 1 2 3 4 5
𝑦 14 27 40 55 68

6. 1912 children were born in a city A in one year out of which 52.5% were male, while
2812 children were born in a city A and B both out of which proportion of male was
0.496. Is the difference in the proportion of male children in two cities significant?
