In the story, Laura Aldama, a descendant of the Tlaxcalteca people who allied
with the Spanish during the conquest, is affected by the guilt and shame of her
ancestors' ways. She feels detached from her indigenous roots and struggles to
conform her identity to the violent history of the conquest. Through Laura's
character, Garro highlights the massive influence of colonization on indigenous
communities in Mexico.
The story launches in a distinctly feminine space in the kitchen. Arriving home
alone at night, Laura signals to her cook, Nacha, to let her in the house as
quietly and quickly as possible. Laura tiptoes into the house and quickly breaks
this silence with a statement: “¿Sabes, Nacha? La culpa es de los tlaxcaltecas”.
In this conversation with Nacha, Laura reveals her aim to explore both
historical and personal negotiations of responsibility, and her choice to include
Nacha in this experience. Over the course of the story, Laura shares with Nacha
her time-traveling experiences, her frustration with Pablo, and her desire to
join permanently with her primo marido. In addition, she continuously seeks
confirmation of her memories, experiences, and feelings from Nacha: “¿No
estás de acuerdo, Nacha?” (Don’t you agree, Nacha?) and “¿Tú me entiendes,
verdad?” (You understand me, right?). It is Nacha’s encouraging responses and
memories that advance the narration, invite Laura’s confessions and allow
their unity. In fact, as Laura travels between worlds, it is Nacha who answers
the door, opens the window, or reminds Laura of where she must go to meet
with her primo marido.
At the end of the story, Nacha hears Laura’s Indigenous husband come near
and she opens the window for Laura to escape. When Laura leaves, Nacha
quietly cleans the house, hides all evidence, and quits the following morning.
The relationship between Nacha and Laura is exceptionally significant to the
short story. Nacha serves as a bridge between two cultures and allows Laura to
smoothly travel between worlds.
Their final twin exits from the Aldama household, at the end of the story,
prove their strong connection. Their relationship inspires one another to leave
their environment in search of something more fulfilling. As Laura travels
between her Indigenous community in the past and her modern Mexican
household, Garro utilizes historical shifts and Laura’s gender and ethnic
identities to explore the discourse surrounding the Indigenous Mexican
woman.
“La culpa es de los tlaxcaltecas” repeatedly parallels the feelings, actions, and
circumstances of Laura with the La Malinche figure. For example, Laura
expresses a powerful sense of having been “betrayed,” and she repeatedly
draws attention to or remembers a sense of culpability. Laura’s guilt becomes
linked with the ways that Mexican society blames La Malinche for the
Indigenous defeat in the Spanish Conquest. Both Laura and Malinche hold the
difficult location of “traveling” between very different cultures, the Indigenous
and Spanish for Malinche, and between modern Mexico and 16th-century
Mexico for Laura.
