Bell Delta: online and face-to-face

Module One
This online module is theoretical and looks at the history of EFL, approaches and methodology, first and second
language acquisition and so on. You can do this from your own country with our online programme. You are
assigned a tutor who works with you - and other participants in your group - using a series of online tasks and
one to one feedback. Unlike many courses you will have constant interaction with tutors who will respond to
messages and mark your work weekly, providing personal rather than generic feedback and advice. At the end
of the course you can take the exam at a local exam centre. There is a list of centres on Cambridge English's
website so you can check the closest one to you. We make the arrangements for the exam on your behalf.

Alternatively, we also offer a two-week face-to-face course option in Cambridge in the summer. The course
is delivered by an experienced Delta trainer and covers input on all the main areas focused on in the exam,
as outlined above. In addition, you receive intensive exam preparation with tips and advice on how to be
successful, as well as practice of each of the question types and a full mock exam. You will receive feedback
on your performance and, with the tutor, you will troubleshoot areas of difficulty. You take the exam itself at
a local exam centre near your home later in the year.

Module Two
This online module is a combination of theory and practice. You work online to complete the written
assignments with personalised feedback from your online tutor as in the first module. You also have to be
observed teaching and this practical element traditionally happens in your own school with your own students,
although it is currently also possible to teach your learners online.

Therefore, it is important that you are teaching when you undertake the module. You will also need to
nominate somebody suitable (e.g. a senior staff member or someone with training experience) to be your
Regional Delta tutor (RDT). So long as we approve this person, we pay them for this work and give them a full
induction to work with you if they have not performed the role before. Please note that it is usually the
responsibility of the candidate to find a suitable RDT and make sure that they can tutor for the duration of the
course, although we can help you find someone if this proves to be difficult. One of your classes will also need
to be assessed by a Cambridge English registered external assessor at some point near the end of the course
and this is something your RDT will organise, although you may have to pay travel costs if an assessor has to
travel internationally for the assessment. The external assessment can also be conducted with an online group.
Further details can be provided.

Alternatively, we offer a face-to-face option in Cambridge which is six weeks in length. This course is run by
experienced Delta trainers who provide practical input and will guide and support you through all the elements
of assessment. Whilst this course is very intensive, it offers the advantage that the module is completed in a
short period of time and in a collaborative environment, as you will be working with other trainees on the
course in small tutor groups. Teaching practice and the assessed lessons are conducted during the course with
local students. In order to apply for the face-to-face course, you will ideally have passed Module One.

Module Three
This module can be completed online and there is also an “on-demand” option which allows you to begin at
any time so long as a suitable tutor is available. It is essentially an extended essay on a chosen specialism.

Why take the Modular Delta with Bell?

Bell has a long history of being at the forefront of innovation in teacher training and the online Delta course
is a very good example. We have established a far-reaching online programme that can provide all three
modules of the Delta syllabus wherever you are in the world. You can take these modules at different times
and in different places, even over a long period of time, if you wish. Our face-to-face courses take place at
our exceptionally well-equipped centre in Cambridge. It is also possible to take a module with Bell even if you
have taken another module elsewhere, but we recommend taking all three modules with Bell.

The workload on all Delta modules is high and demanding, as we aim to get you to a level where you can
achieve your best possible result.

Taking the Modules in order

It is possible to take the modules in different orders, but we strongly recommend that you start with Module
One, as it is the natural starting point which provides the theoretical underpinning of Modules Two and
Three, and it can be hard to pass Modules Two and Three without that knowledge. You should only consider
starting with Modules Two or Three if you are absolutely sure you have a sound understanding of the
theoretical and practical issues addressed in Module One, particularly of the main principles and practices of
English Language Teaching.

Taking the Modules simultaneously

We strongly advise you not to study more than one module at once, as doing so will dramatically reduce
your chances of success. Most people who attempt this have only done so because they have seriously
underestimated the workload involved.

Estimated study time

Module One A minimum of about 14 hours a week
A minimum of about 130 hours: 25 hours for each of the 4 LSA assignments and
Module Two
around 30 hours for the PDA assignment
Module Three A minimum of about 70 hours’ work over the whole course

Please do not apply if you are not able to give a substantial amount of commitment and time to the course.
