Project Summary

International Masters in Security, Intelligence and Strategic StudiesRecognising that there is a growing need for
high quality graduates with knowledge of security, this joint master degree brings together European and
international partners to provide an integrated study programme that engages with theoretical, empirical and
applied understandings of three core themes - security, intelligence and strategy – alongside sub-themes,
including conflict and peacebuilding. The programme acknowledges that these themes reflect a complex set of
interlocking political, economic, technological, social, and cultural challenges and involve a wide range of state
and non-state actors. Students on this programme will engage with the intellectual questions, as well as the policy
and ethical dilemmas that arise when actors seek to resolve threats ranging from traditional interstate conflict to
diverse contemporary issues such as terrorism, transnational organised crime, and the insecurity and vulnerability
associated with energy resources or technological and cyberspace advancements. Students will gain experience
of the methods and products (linked to intelligence gathering and analysis, diplomacy and strategic
communications) used to advance security. As such, students will obtain a broad understanding of the
multi-dimensional nature of international security for states, society and business enterprises operating within an
increasingly interdependent and volatile world. The degree is coordinated via a consortium that includes the
University of Glasgow, Dublin City University, Charles University and the University of Trento, in conjunction with
OTH Regensburg and the University of Cadiz and 28 other worldwide associate partners representing academic
and practitioner institutions. The programme aims to ensure students: • attain a firm understanding of the
theoretical concepts that inform contemporary security practices • acquire the expertise and necessary skills to
critically engage with security, intelligence and strategy in a practical and applied manner • are provided with
experiential learning and employability enhancement through work-based learning opportunities with practitioner
organisations and relevant policy and scenario workshops or activities • have access to a range of academic and
non-academic personnel from industry and business, the military, intelligence community, governmental and
non-governmental organisations thus helping to understand how security experts shape security practice (and
vice versa)• utilise mobility experiences to develop, appreciate the importance of, and articulate intercultural
awareness as a key aspect of addressing security challenges as well as developing personal development ad
employability skill• train in research design and methods to support deep and original research engagement with
security studies• enhance knowledge, critical thinking and experience of security studies through
multidisciplinarity.
