Project Summary

The International MSc in Infectious Diseases and One Health (IDOH+) is a two-year (120 ECTS) joint master
degree taught in English and awarded by three European universities (Université de Tours (UT) - France,
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) - Spain and Hannover Medical School (Medizinische Hochschule
Hannover, MHH)- Germany. The three universities work in very close collaboration with the worldwide recognized
research institutes and centers: INRA, CReSA-IRTA and the R. Koch Institute. The IDOH+ consortium also
includes 46 associate partners (universities, research centres, national public bodies, NGO and companies
focused on pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, vaccines and animal nutrition). They will be involved in the programme
in different ways, such as providing guest lecturers in addition to internships. The IDOH programme has
ambitious goals to attract the very best students worldwide and to construct a multidisciplinary network focused
on infectious diseases in a One Health framework, addressing health risks at the animal-human-ecosystems
interfaces. All students begin their education at the UT, continue their second semester at the UAB and then join
the MHH for the third semester. They will be trained in infectious diseases, public health and One Health concept,
immunology, host-pathogen interactions, virulence and resistance especially to antibiotics, animal welfare and
animal models, ethics, epidemiology, emerging/zoonotic diseases, disease management, food safety,
biosafety/biocontainment, diagnostics, translational medicine, innovative therapies, intervention strategies,
genomes and gene editing, scientific communication. Moreover, IDOH+ students will follow courses in French
and Spanish to acquire basic skills in these two widespread spoken languages. Upon completion of their
coursework, the students will proceed to a 6-month masters thesis project at any organization in the network. A
clear advantage for the IDOH+ students is that they can choose from an outstanding number of different partners
to carry out the research training period.A summer school focused on transversal skills will be organised in
Barcelona. A Master thesis defense workshop will be held at the end of the second academic year of each intake.
We will invite our industry partners to present their recent developments and their company’s research focus in
networking symposia. At the end of the IDOH+ programme, students will be awarded a joint diploma. With the
IDOH+ programme, we aim to provide students with the indispensable tools to be adaptable, flexible and open to
new environments, i.e., we are giving them the chance to experience true internationality and mobility, and to
form close friendships as well as to build a professional network with people from all over the world in addition to
developing essential skills in infectious diseases and One Health concept. More
