Project Summary

In the age of data explosion, scientists are dealing with massive magnitude of unstructured, complex data which
contain unprecedented amount of decrypted information which in turn can facilitate the breakthrough data-driven
discoveries and predictions. At the same time software and system engineers focus their attention on the
engineering process of software, therefore collecting requirements and building system architectures that, more
and more, deal with data collections and management. However, data scientists and software engineers
processes are typically carried out in an independent manner ringing to the creation of sub-optimal systems. The
EMJMD Programme on the Engineering of Data-intensive Intelligent Software Systems (EDISS) promises to
bridge this gap by bringing together data scientists and software engineers in order to engineer data-intensive
intelligent software systems. EDISS is a joint master program between Åbo Akademi University (AAU), Finland,
University of L’Aquila (UAQ), Italy, the Mälardalen University (MDH), Sweden, and Universitat de les Illes Balears
(UIB), Spain. The main goal of the EDISS Programme is to educate the next generation of professionals on the
key competencies to significantly impact and shape the industry and society in the 21st century to provide the
proper education to face the great need of integrating data science and ML solutions into software and system
engineering processes. We intend to do so by bringing together software engineering educators working in data
collection, data-driven assessment, and decision-making for both design- and runtime and software engineers,
architects and data scientists working on data pipelines, data architectures, DataOps and in experimentation
systems. We expect that such synergy will lead to sharing knowledge and expertise, and thus create new ideas
and impactful solutions. EDISS will educate experts who can masterfully integrate data science and ML solutions
into software and system engineering processes.
