Metaphysical

Poetry

The poets of this ‘school’ have a fondness for indulging in ‘nice speculations of
philosophy’ in unusual context. The poems are also usually fairly concentrated in
thought, dense of meaning. The poet seems to cram as much by way of thought
or speculation into the smallest space when dealing with what is often a vast
subject which in another person’s hands would be contained within the covers of
a book. The reader is often held to an idea or line of argument. He is not invited
to ‘pause upon it, or wander with it, muse upon it or reBlect upon it’, (Keats)
before the poet is off again with the next extrapolation of his ideas. It follows
that a metaphysical poem tends to be fairly brief with words chosen with skill
and care. Often the phrase ‘strong lines’ is used in association with metaphysical
poems, meaning following a single thought through to the end of the piece.
There is also a fondness for ‘conceits’. A conceit is a comparison whose ingenuity
is sometimes more striking than its appropriateness.

Sir Walter Raleigh (?1552-1618)

The Passionate Man’s Pilgrimage, supposed to be written by one at the point of


death.

Give me my Scallop shell of quiet,


My staffe of Faith to walk upon,
My scrip of Joy, Immortal diet,
My bottle of salvation:
My Gowne of Glory, hopes true gage,
And thus I’le take my pilgrimage.

Blood must be my bodies balmer,


No other balme will there be given
Whilst my soul like a white Palmer
Travels to the land of heaven,
Over the silver mountains,
Where spring the Nectar fountains:
And there I’le kisse
The bowle of blisse,
And drinke my Bill
On every milken hill.
My soule will be a’ drie before,
But after, it will nere thirst more.

And by the happie blisfull way


More peaceful Pilgrms I shall see,
That have shooke off their gownes of clay,

And when our bottles and all we,


Are Bill’d with immortalitie:
Then the holy paths wee’le travel
Strewde with Rubies thicke as gravell
Ceelings of Diamonds, Saphire Bloores,
High walles of Corall and Pearl Bowres.

From thence to heavens Bribles hall


Where no corrupted voyces brall,
No Conscience molten into gold,
Nor forg’d accusers bought and sold,
No cause deferd, nor vaine spent Journey,
For there Christ is the King’s Atturney:
Who pleads for all without degrees,
And he hath Angells, but no fees.

When the grand twelve million Jury


Of our sinnes with sinfull fury,
Gainst our soules blacke verdicts give,
Christ pleades his death, and then we live,
Be thou my speaker, taintless pleader,
Unblotted Lawyer, true proceeder,
Thou movest salvation even for almes:
Not with bribed Lawyers palmes.

And this is my eternal plea


To Him that made Heaven, Earth and Sea,
Seeing my Blesh must die so soone,
And want a head to dine next noone,
Just at the stroke when my vaines start and spred
Set on my soul an everlasting head.
Then am I readie like a palmer Bit,
To tread those blest paths which before I writ.

What is our life? A play of passion,


Our mirth the musicke of division,
Our mothers wombs the tyring houses be,
Where we are drest for this short Comedy,
Heaven the Judicious sharpe spectator is,
That sits and markes still who doth act amisse,
Our graves that hide us from the searching Sunne,
Are like drawne curtaynes when the play is done,
Thus march we playing to our latest rest,
Onely we dye in earnest, that’s no Jest.

The Flea – by John Donne (1572-1631)

Marke but this Blea, and marke in this,


How little that which thou deny’st me is;
Mee it suck’t Birst, and now sucks thee,
And in this Blea, our two bloods mingled bee;
Confesse it, this cannot be saide
A sinne, or shame, or losse of maidenhead,
Yet this enjoynes before it wooe,
And pamper’d swells with one blood made of two,
And this, alas, is more than we would doe.

Oh stay, three lives in one Blea spare,


Where wee almost, nay more than maryed are:
This Blea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is;
Though parents grudge, and you, w’are met,
And cloysterd in these living walls of jet.
Though use make thee apt to kill mee,
Let not to this, selfe murder added bee,
And sacrilege, three sinnes in killing thee.

Cruel and sodaine, hast thou since


Purpled thy naile, in blood of innocence?
In what could this Blea guilty bee,
Except in that drop which it suckt from thee?
Yet thou triumph’st, and saist that thou
Find’st not thy selfe, nor mee the weaker now;
Just so much honor, when thou yeeld’st to mee,
Will wast, as this Blea’s death tooke life from thee.

The Good-Morrow by John .Donne

I wonder by my troth, what thou, and I


Did, till we lov’d? were we not wean’d till then?
But suck’d on country pleasures, childishly?
Or snorted we i’the seaven sleepers den?
‘Twas so; But this, all pleasures fancies bee.
If ever any beauty I did see,
Which I desir’d, and got, ‘twas but a dreame of thee.
And now good morrow to our waking soules,
Which watch not one another out of feare;
For love, all love of other sights controules,
And makes one little roome, an every where.
Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone,

My face in thine eye, thine in mine appears,


And true plaine hearts doe in the faces rest,
Where can we Binde two better hemispheres

What ever dyes, was not mixt equally;
If our two loves be one, or, thou and I

Oh my black soul! now thou art summoned

At the round earths imagin’d corners, blow

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou thinks’t, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, not yet canst thou kill mee.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must Blow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou are slave to Fate, Chance, kings and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,

Batter my heart, three person’d God; for, you


As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o’erthrow mee, and bend
Your force, to brake, blowe, burn and make me new.
I, like an usurpt towne, to’another due,
Labour to’admit you, but Oh, to no end,
Reason your viceroy in mee, mee should defend,
But is captiv’d, and proves weake or untrue.
Yet dearly’I love you, and would be loved faine,
But am betroth’d unto your enemie:
Divorce mee, untie, or breake that knot againe,
