Yes! Parents can refuse to immunize their children because some parents have fear about the
potential discomfort or side effects of the shots, some reasons of parent’s refusal are religious
reasons, parents’ personal belief, and hearing some reports or issues about vaccine they often
misinterpret or misunderstand information. As a nurse it is our responsibility to show a compassion,
patience and respect for their refusal, but we need to cite their reasons for hesitancy, as a health care
provider it is necessary that we should discuss and demonstrate the importance of immunization,
educate and encourage them that immunizations is very important because it can save her child’s life
and it is very safe and effective. We need to provide them an appropriate information and if they will
still refuse they need to sign a waiver refusal.
