STATISTICAL ANALYSIS PHU KAMASONDO (updated to 15th April 2019)

In the PHU of Kamasondo (Buya Romende District), I visited and scanned

137 women, from December the 6th (first visit) to April the 17th (fifth and
last visit).
The mean age was 25.26 years (SD 6.67 years), while the median age was 25
years. The mean gestation age was 27 weeks and 6 days (SD 44d).
Among them, there were twenty-eight cases of first pregnancy (20.44%),
with a mean age of 17 years.
Only one case was referred to Saint John of God Hospital in Mabesseneh for
a placenta praevia at full term, to avoid dangerous bleeding during the
labour. Instead I advised thirty-two women (23.26%) to repeat a free
ultrasound during the following visits. Not all the women followed this
advice and fifteen of them were lost to the follow up (68.18%).
The cases that need referral were:
 Twenty-six Breech Presentation (18.98%)
 Eight transvers presentation (5.84%)
 Six cases of placenta praevia (4.38%)
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS-KAMASONDO PHU NO 137 (till 15/04/2019)
Mean Age (years) 25,26 (18,59 – 31,93)
Median Age (years) 25
Primipara - no (%) 28 (20,44)
Mean age of Primipare 17
Mean Number of pregnancies 2,84 (± 2,32)
Mean Number of deliveries 2,64 (±2,19)
Mean number of children alive 1,97 (±1,7)
Average Gestational Age 27w6d (±44d)
Breech Presentation - no (%) 26 (18,98)
Transverse Presentation - no (%) 8 (5,84)
Placenta Praevia - no (%) 6 (4,38)
Women referred to the Mobile clinic for follow up - no (%) 32 (23,36)
Women Referred to hospitals for further examination - no (%) 1 (0,73)
Women lost to the follow up - no (%) 15 (68,18)
Excluding the one referred, the other cases of placenta praevia (complete
or marginal) that have repeated the scan (thus the patients lost to the
follow up could not be considered) resolved naturally as the pregnancies
advanced.

The percentage of women lost to the follow up (the highest among the
different PHUs) and the low number of women that joined the clinic are
due to:
 An incorrect information about the ultrasound. The women were told
that the ultrasound could damage the foetus;
 The midwife in charge until March used to ask the women 5000 Leon
to do the ultrasound.
Now, with the change of both CHO and midwife, an increase in the
number of women joining the ultrasound clinic can be noticed but the
rate of follow up is still low; women’s trust in the healthcare is not fully
restored.
