Scoring

● When a player runs the ball into the end zone, it is called a touchdown= 6 points
● When a touchdown has occurred, the scoring team has the op on of kicking an extra point= 1point
● When a touchdown has occurred, the scoring team has the op on of throwing for a two-point
conversion=2 points
● When a team decides to kick the ball through the goal posts instead of score a touchdown, it is a
field goal= 3 points
Players

● 11 players on a team
Moving the ball

● The CENTER passes the ball to the QUARTERBACK, this is called the SNAP
● On the hike, anyone can move over the LINE OF SCRIMMAGE (Posi on on the field where play begins)
● Offense has four “DOWNS” to get the ball 10 yards
● If they pass the 10 yard line, they get a brand new set of downs=they start at 1 again
● The object is to catch the ball or run the ball into the end zone.
● A LATERAL is when the ball is thrown, pitched, or tossed sideways or backwards at any me.
● A forward lateral is illegal.
● Once the ball is scored, the offense has the op on of kicking an EXTRA POINT or a emp ng a TWO POINT
CONVERSION.
● If the team is on the fourth down and does not believe they can score, they can PUNT the ball to clear out
or a empt a FIELD GOAL and kick the ball through the goal posts.
● If the offense cannot complete the fourth down without scoring or passing the 10 yard line, it is a turnover
and the play switches direc ons.
Dead Ball

● Ball carrier is downed


● Forward pass incomplete
● Ball or ball carrier touches sideline
Penal es

● Offending team is awarded 5,10,15 yards depending on the foul


● If offense commits a foul, it stays the same down but the penalty distance is added (what was 1st and 10 is
now 1st and 25)
● If defense commits a foul and the penalty carries the ball over the 10 yard line, the downs are reset.
● Some penal es can be declined depending on the situa on
● Examples of personal fouls:
o Facemask, holding, pass interference, and horse collar
Kickoff

● At the beginning of the game and a er a point is scored, the scoring team (or the team that loses the coin
toss) lines up at their end and kicks the ball to the other team. The other team a empts to catch the ball
and run it as far as they can without ge ng tackled. Where they get tackled or run out of bounds is where
their four downs begin. It would be 1st and 10.

● The offense must tell the ref that they will punt on the fourth down if they want to do that. The
kicking team must have all of its players, except for the punter, on the line of scrimmage. No
kicking team players may move un l the ball is kicked. There are no restric ons to the number of
players the defensive team must have on the line. If a punt crosses the scrimmage line and
touches a player from either team and then hits the ground, the ball is dead at that spot and
belongs to the receiving team (flag football rule only).
