CHEM1001 – SGTA 1 (WEEK2)

Scientific Notation: Expressing very large and small numbers.

1 Express each number in scientific notation:
a. 0.1143 s (time light takes to travel around the world)
b. 0.000000000000000000099
2 Express 5x109 years in decimal notation.

Units: The fundamental value of a quantity still remains the same, regardless of the unit
expressed in.

3 What is a conversion factor (eg kg → g)? If your boss decides to pay 25 c/hr rather than
$25/hr, would you notice??
4 A classroom has a volume of 285 m3. What is its volume in cm3?

Periodic Table
An atom has three types of particles: neutron, proton and electron.

5 What is the charge of a neutron? What is the charge of a proton? What is the charge
of an electron?
6 Why does the fluorine atom have the atomic number 9? How many protons does it
have? How many electrons? If you added an electron to a fluorine atom, what would
its charge be?
7 Why does the sodium atom have the atomic number 11? How many protons does it
have? How many electrons? If you removed an electron from a sodium atom, what
would its charge be?
8 Some elements, such as carbon, have multiple forms with different atomic masses.
Their masses differ because they possess a different number of neutrons. However, as
they have the same number of protons, they are the same element. What do we call
these different forms of the same element?

Mole
9 How is molar mass calculated? Calculate Molar mass for Butane C4H10.
10 If the mole is a unit, can we convert mole values into other units?
11 What is Avogadro’s constant?
