What is a Fin?
Define efficiency and effectiveness of the fin.
Give examples of use of fins in various engineering applications.
Part-B
An aluminum alloy fin of 7 mm thick and 50 mm long protrudes from a wall, which is
maintained at 1200C. The ambient air temperature is 220C. The heat transfer
coefficient and conductivity of the fin material are 140 W/m2K and 55 W/mK
respectively. Determine, (i)Temperature at the end of the fin,(ii) Temperature at the
middle of the fin,(iii) Total heat dissipated by the fin.

Part-B
Explain the lumped heat capacity system and derive temperature distribution
equation for unsteady heat conduction.
Alloy steel ball of 2 mm diameter heated to 8000C is quenched in a bath at 1000C.
The material properties of the ball are K = 205 kJ/m hr K, density= 7860 kg/m3, Cp =
0.45 kJ/kg K, h = 150 kJ/ hr m2K. Determine (i) Temperature of ball after 10 second
and (ii) Time for ball to cool to 4000C.
