Writing Task 1

You should spend 20 minutes on the task.

You are unhappy about a plan to make your local airport bigger and increase the
number of flights. You live near the airport. Write a letter to your local newspaper. In
your letter;

Explain where you live

Describe the problem
Give reasons why you do not want this development
You should write at least 150 words

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 7 score. Here is the examiner’s
comment: The response to the task is fluent, although there is room for expansion and
clarification of some aspects of the task. The message is well-organized and can be followed
throughout with the writer making good use if ‘signpost words’. There are some problems with
the word choice and with word formation (e.g ‘big noise’, ‘distractive’), but the range of
sentence structures is varied and well controlled for accuracy.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing with regard to the article in your newspaper dated 7 th September. My house is
situated within 20 minutes’ walk of the airport. Please allow me to point out the problems
which have caused serious damage on the residential area. I am fully sure that the problems
must be aggravated if the plan is carried out to expand the airport and increase the number of
flights.
First of all, the low-flying aero planes are utterly distractive. They make such a big noise that I
cannot concentrate on the housework at all. What is worse, I am woken up by the late hour
flights at midnight; I was diagnosed with insomnia the other day. I should call this situation
noise pollution.
Secondly, I am afraid that the expansion of the airport may reduce the plot of land for the
playground which is under construction near the airport sat the moment.
To sum up, I strongly disagree with the plan. I would appreciate if you could possibly write the
article about the problems and disagreement as I said above.
Yours faithfully,
Joe

Dear ..................,

Dear Jennifer,

I am writing to request some unpaid leaves next month.

My parents’ 60th wedding anniversary is on March 21st, and they are planning to celebrate this
significant achievement with all their children and grandchildren. To do this, they have rented a
house big enough to accommodate the whole family.

To participate in this special occasion, I would need to be away for four days, from Monday 19 th
to Thursday 23rd. My schedule for that week is relatively t, apart from two meetings with
clients. Netta would be able to attend these in my place, as she has previous dealings with both
companies and knows the relevant staff there. I have no other urgent work at that time.
I would be very grateful if you could all me this time. These few days are very important to my
parents and the whole family, and it would be a way to thank them for all the support they
have given me.

You recently received a letter from a friend asking for advice about whether to go to
college or to try to get a job. You think he/she should get a job.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter:

Say why he/she would not enjoy going to college

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ...................,

Dear Haruka,

I am writing a reply to your letter that asking for advice about whether to go to college or to try
to get a job. I think trying to get a job is better for you, I would like to write reasons why.

At first, I will mention about disadvantage of going to college. I think you would not enjoy it,
because in college, especially Japanese College, you could only meant people who are around
same age as you. You must have already met such people in your junior high school and high
school. In addition to it, many students tent to just have fun with friends beside study. The
reason why this happens, it is usually very difficult to enter Japanese colleges but to graduate it
is not so difficult for that reason, many students tend to just have enjoyment, like having
parties, going out, and going travel. However college costs a huge amount of money on you.
The fee of it is not cheap of course. I think it is a waste of money to go to college.
Next I would tell you why getting a job is a good idea for you. The most valuable point is
experience. Not like college, you can see many people from different age of you by talking with
them, you can get many knowledge of life and it would be good for you. You can realize how
difficult it is to earn money also you know may social systems.

Lastly I would like to suggest the types of jobs that would be suitable for you. I think you are
good at talking with people, so the reception of company, school or hotel would be good. You
can meet not only colleagues but also many people of customers. If you get a job of hotel, you
can use your English skills as well.
In conclusion, you should try to get a job for these reasons. Good luck

You have had a bank account for a few years. Recently you received a letter from the
bank stating that your account is $240 overdrawn and that you will be charged $70
which will be taken directly from your account. You know that this information is
incorrect.

Write a letter to the bank. Explain what has happened and say what you would like
them to do about it.
You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear Sir,
I am writing a reply to a letter received by you a few days ago. In your letter you state that I am
$240 overdrawn and that you will be charging me $70.
I would like to point out the reason I am overdrawn is because of a mistake made by your bank.
If you look through your records you will see that I wrote several weeks ago explaining the
situation. For the last twelve months, I have been paying $300 a month for a car I bought last
summer. The monthly payments were taken directly from my bank account. However, two
month ago I sold the car and I wrote to you instructing you to stop paying the monthly
installments. I received a letter from you acknowledging my request, but, for some reason,
nothing was done about it. Another $300 installment has been paid this month and this is the
reason why I am overdrawn.

I would like you to contact the garage where I bought the car explaining your error. I would also
like you to ask them to return the money.

Yours faithfully,

you would be able to hear so much. So I hope you will accept my apologies.

As you may guessed, I am trying to refit my kitchen in the evenings when I get home from work.
Unfortunately it is all taking longer than expected and I have been having problems with getting
things to fit properly. This has meant a lot of banging and hammering.
As the kitchen is still not finished, I have decide to call in a professional builder who will finish
the work in the next day or two. He will work only during daytime hours, so you will not be
disturbed in the evenings again, I promise.
Sorry to have caused these problems.

Writing Task 1:

There have been several complaints about the reception area where visitors to your
company arrive. Your manager has asked you to suggest how the reception area could
be improved.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter,

 describe the complaints that have been made
 say why the reception area is important
 suggest how the reception area could be improved
Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................,

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to outline the complaints that have been made about the reception area as well as
to suggest several improvements to be implemented.

A number of visitors expressed their dissatisfaction with our company’s reception area due to
the fact that it is not spacious and overcrowded. What is more, there are not enough desks to
fill in the various forms. In addition, only one receptionist can be addressed to with a great
number of questions which leads to the place being overcrowded.
Needless to say, the area where visitors arrive is extremely important as it is the image of a
company and gives the first impression about the organization. Taking everything to conclusion,
it is highly recommended to widen the reception area by using room next to it.
However, it would be beneficial to equip the place with additional furniture for visitors to use.
Finally, hiring a second receptionist would be definitely advantageous.
I am looking forward to the changes being implemented.

Yours sincerely,
Edward

You and some friends ate a meal at a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, and you were very
pleased with the food and service.
Write a letter to the restaurant manager. In your letter:
 give details of your visit to the restaurant
 explain the reason for the celebration
 say what was good about the food and the service
Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write your own addresses.

Begin your letters as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my delight with the excellent service and high quality food that your
restaurant provided us last Saturday night, on the occasion of my 50th birthday. We were a
party of twelve, which included my family, close friends and colleagues from work. Your staff
went out of their way to provide seating arrangements that were easily accessible, and did not
interfere with other diners. I find that this is unusual in many restaurants these days. The
waiters were extremely professional and polite, and were obviously experienced as they did not
encroach too much on the proceedings.
Your current menu offers a great deal of choice, as does your wine list, and everything was
available. There were no complaints about the quality or quantity of the dishes served, and the
presentation of each was akin to the dishes produced in shows such as ‘Master Chef’.
I ordered the rack of lamb ribs, which was deliciously succulent and, if anything, may be slightly
too large. Nevertheless, I managed to finish it!
I was similarly impressed with the large variety of local and international wines available. The
wine was ordered arrived at the correct temperature that each wine should be consumed at.
The waiters were familiar with the etiquette of drinking and enjoying fine wines, and the
service was paramount.
All-in-all, our group enjoyed a delicious meal at your establishment, and I had a very happy
birthday.
Congratulations once again.
Yours sincerely,
Zubair

You were hurt in a minor accident inside a supermarket, and you wish to complain to
the supermarket.
Write a letter to the manager of the supermarket. In your letter
 say who you are
 give details about the accident
 suggest how the supermarket could prevent similar accidents
Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Liam Test, I am the student that got hurt in the accident in front of your row of
bean-tins in your supermarket. Let me give you some details about the accident first. I was just
going around the corner from the vegetables to beans when a pregnant woman crashed into
me with her shopping cart. It was impossible to see each other before the accident because this
special corner is very dark and the light did not even work, probably because the eight bulbs
were old and did not serve anymore. Anyway, the floor was very slippery and wet because the
rain was dripping through the non-waterproof ceiling, so I slipped, fell and knocked myself out
on the bean-tins. I lost consciousness. Your insurance played for the accident but let me just
give you some advice to prevent further accidents in your supermarket: make sure you ceiling is
fixed and the floor is dry. You could also arrange your rows in a way that makes it possible for
your customers to take care of each other. Always get the lights checked at least once a week,
and change damaged bulbs immediately. This would help making our supermarket a safer
place.

Sincerely yours,
Liam

Dear ..................,

Dear Dave,
I am writing to let you know that at last we have moved to a bigger house! We just could not go
on living in the two-bedroom bunglow now that the twins are growing up and the new baby has
arrived. So we started looking- and one thing led to another and finally here we are in our new
home.
I am sure you will like it. We have three bedrooms now, and a very modern bathroom and
kitchen. The kids are happy because there is much more space with the big living room and the
garden outside. But Michaels is the happiest of all because he does not need to do much
decorating.
Why don’t you come around this weekend and see what you think of our new place? We would
all love to see you and if the weather is good we can have a barbecue in the garden.
Our new address and phone number are below, so give us a call and let us know when to
expect you.

Your local council is considering closing a sports and leisure centre that it runs, in order
to save money.
Write a letter to the local council. In your letter,
 give details of how you and your friends or family use the centre
 explain why the sports and leisure centre is important for the local community
 describe the possible effects on local people if the centre closes
You should write at least 150 words
.
You do NOT need to write your own addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Irana Smirnova and I am writing to raise my concern regarding the plans to close
our local sports and leisure center. It is hard to underestimate the importance of this center for
citizens; in fact it became the point where we all meet each other to share some positive
emotions and spend free time. Also, one con not miss the influence of sporting activities
provided there on the health of the people.
My family is used to going th the center several times a week. Mu husband and I attended
fitness lessons for adults on Monday and Wednesday after work. My two sons went to the
center after school, they have a place there to do their homework, to play with other children
and relax in safe environment. On weekends we usually meet friends there and go to the
swimming pool or open air tennis carts provided that it does not rain cats and dogs.
I can think of several negative consequences the closure of the center could do. Firstly, people
become less engaged in sport activities which will definitely affect their health. Secondly,
children will lose the opportunity to spend their time in a healthy atmosphere and will spend
more time at the street. Finally, for the people interested in sport it will become difficult to get
to the place to exercise as the nearest sports center is in Tomton, which is 30 miles away.
I believe this question deserves close attention.
Yours faithfully,
Irana Smirnova

You are going to visit New Zealand for an 'English and Homestay' program. You have
just received details of your homestay host family.
Write your first letter to the family. In your letter
 introduce yourself
 ask the family some questions to get information that is important to you
 tell the family about your arrival date and time
Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear .................,

Dear Sally,
My departure date for New Zealand is drawing near, and I am busy with preparations. I have
enrolled at an institution called ‘ABD English’ in Wellinton, for a six-month advanced course,
full-time. It is quite expensive but I am hopeful of improving my pronunciation, especially.
To assist in covering the costs of my study, I aim to find a part-time job. Not only are the college
fees rather high, but also I know that rental accommodation in the capital city will not be
cheap, to say nothing of food and heating expenses! So I would very much like to arrange some
temporary employment before I arrive.
I was wondering if you could cask around among your friends and colleagues to see if anyone
wants a house-cleaner. Gardener, or nanny for their children. I know you have a wide social
network in Wellington which you could canvas for me, if you would not mind. I would be so
grateful.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Best wishes,
Margot

was wondering if you might be interested?
In particular I want to sell my big dining table. Do you remember it – the one in the living room?
It has wooden legs and a grey top and it is big enough for six people. There are six matching
chairs to go with it.
I know you have always liked tis furniture so I could let you have it at a good price. I would
rather it to you than to a stranger!
Why don’t you come around and take another look at them on Saturday? We will be here all
day, so maybe we could have some lunch together?

Give me a ring and let me know,

Love,

You are living in a University residence, and you have a problem with the high levels of

Dear ...................,
Model Answer 1:

Dear Mr Oliver,

I am writing this letter regarding the incessant noise that comes from the new canteen that has
recently opened near my University residence. Although I am delighted that we have this
facility that offers tremendous benefits to students, the restaurant remains open up to
midnight, and as a result, there is considerable talking, shouting, music, and the loud sound of
motorbikes continuing until about 12:30 each night.

This causes me and my neighbors in the residence a serious quandary because at that time we
are either trying to sleep, study or complete an assignment. The noise is so deafening that it is
quite impossible to sleep. The sound and the commotion disturb us and hamper our sleep at
night, making us tired in the mornings or affecting the progress of our studies or assignment. I
am sure you will comprehend that this is a very worrying situation for us all.

To prevent further complications, I would like to suggest that the campus authorities restrict
the canteen’s opening hours from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. I propose that we also put up some
signs reminding users to be considerate and keep their noise to an absolute minimum. I hope
you would take the initiative to implement them to save us from the nuisance.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this important matter.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Blake
Model Answer 2:
Dear Mr Muller,
I am Elena Shephard, a resident at the Brookbrain University Residential Area, writing to
complain about the unbearable noise and cacophony from a newly opened restaurant. I am
hoping that you will intervene to resolve the problem.
The ceaseless noise problem from the newly opened restaurant has become so severe that it is
giving us mental trauma. I am very pleased about living in this otherwise great and peaceful
residential area, but the high-pitched noise and honks from motor vehicles generated due to
the gathering at the restaurant have made the life of the residents extremely difficult.
It has become such a big problem for us because this eatery remains open till 2:00 in the
morning starting from 9.00 AM, and it attracts a large number of crowds every hour. The
customers bring cars and motorcycles and talk in front of the restaurant. Moreover, the
restaurant authority uses loudspeakers to listen to music day and night. It affects our sleep,
study and work since we can hardly concentrate or sleep when there is extreme noise around
us.

To solve the problem, the campus authority needs to restrict the canteen’s opening and closing
hours between 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM. I suppose the restaurant authority should put some
signs to request guests not to use any horns, and stop using the loud music altogether. We are
hoping that you would make sure these steps are implemented to keep the noise absolute
minimum.
Thank you for your kind attention and initiatives in advance.
Sincerely yours,

Elena Shephard

Dear Victor,

Hope this letter finds you in good health and spirit. I sure also would like to thank you for
trusting me with such an important matter. So, here is what I've to say in response to your
queries about the Pharmacy course at Monash University.

I understand that you also want to pursue a bachelor degree in Pharmacy from Monash
University which I attended. By the way, pharmacy is not an easy subject since it involves very
complex techniques and skills of preparing and dispensing medicines or drugs, and thus saving
human life also. Students attending pharmacy degrees will learn how different types of drugs
affect the human body and mind and how they interact when mixed together.
Of course, the good thing is that the university, you're choosing, has some of the best pharmacy
syllabuses, faculty members and laboratory facilities to teach you just what you need to
succeed.

So, just visit the university website at www.monash.edu to learn more about how to apply
online, or just call the admission officer to ask him or her to send you the admission form and
other necessary papers in the mail, if you want to proceed further.

Take care. See you soon.

Warm wishes,

Mitchel

Dear Shrity,
I’m so excited that you’ll be visiting me in Adelaide this coming March. I’ve made many plans
for us, and I’m eagerly waiting for your arrival. We haven’t seen each other for ages and I hope
you had been great during this time. I have a favour to ask you, and I hope it wouldn’t be a
burden for you.
I’d really appreciate it if you could meet my mother before flying to Australia as I’d want you to
bring a couple of items for me. The first thing is a woollen cardigan that my grandmother made
for me. It has some sentimental values both for my grandmother and me. My mother would
also give you a couple of books – don’t worry, they are not heavy. I need those books to
complete a thesis. I couldn’t find them here. Finally, my mother would also give you a tin jar
that will contain some homemade cookies and delicacies that my mother used to prepare me in
my childhood. They also have emotional and sentimental values both to me and my mother.
I do hope that it'll not cause you any problem. In the meantime, send me your travel itinerary
so that I can plan to receive you at the airport. We'll take a taxi and directly get back to my
apartment.
I can’t wait to see you and spend some quality time as friends.

Have a safe flight.

Model Answer 2:

Dear Bijoy,
I can't express how excited I really am to learn that you'll come to Vienna just a week later. It
seems ages since we last saw or talked to each other, and there is a lot we need to catch up
with. I'm looking forward to meeting you soon, and I also have a favour to ask.
I'd like you to meet my parents before you pack your luggage as my parents are going to give
you some things for me. Don't worry, they are just a couple of small items, and I hope they
wouldn't cause you much trouble or add much weight to your luggage. The first thing is a photo
album that contains some of our family pictures. This has sentimental value to me as it contains
some photos from my childhood when my grandparents were alive. The second and final item
is a jar of homemade cookies that my mother made for me. She makes those cookies just
before my birthday each year. After I came to Austria, she did the same for the last two years
but could not send those to me. I’ve told some of my classmates here how delicious the cookies
are, and they're very keen to try them! And I'm sure my mother would be very delighted if she
can send it to me.
I do hope that it's manageable for you, and won't cause you much trouble. I’m very excited to
meet you soon. I can meet you in the evening on any Sunday. Just let me know when you're
free. You've my mobile number, so just call me or send me a text.
Yours truly,
Anil
