Assignment 1 – Individual Lesson Plan (40%)

Due on SUNDAY March 26th 2023 before 11.59pm.

Please upload the completed assignment in pdf.format to ‘turnitin’ via the class
SOUL page. Make sure your FULL NAME, ENGLISH NAME AND STUDENT ID is
clearly shown on the cover page for your assignment. The assignment (excluding
the examples of student learning materials) should fit comfortably on a
maximum 8 A4 pages in Times New Roman font.

This Assignment has two sections :


1) You will plan a one hour lesson for ESOL students which introduces a specific
grammar point using an aspect of the past or present tense and gives students
practice in the skill of reading, writing, listening or speaking.
2) You will provide 2 examples of student learning materials suitable for use in
this lesson. One example may be adapted from a commercial source e.g. ESOL
textbook and the other should be self –designed.

Your lesson plan should include the following components, described appropriately.
You may use point form to convey your ideas as lengthy prose should be avoided in
this type of planning assignment.

Background information about the students


 a brief description of students in this ESOL class e.g. class size, age group,
cultural background, learning background, preferred learning styles, reasons
for learning English, current English level/ assumption about what they
already know.

Any anticipated problems and brief suggestions how to handle these


 These could be related to individual students, class management issues and so
forth.
Aims of the lesson
 The particular grammar point to be focused on (please identify the tense, aspect
and form here).
 The language skill to be practiced (taking into account the various learning
styles also).
 What the students should be able to do by the end of the lesson.
A suitably detailed description for each stage of the one hour lesson with
realistic tasks and timings
 Lesson stage (e.g. Lead-in).
 Procedure (what the teacher will do.)
 Tasks (what the students will do).

NB The number of stages in your lesson is flexible. If your plan is clear and coherent
another teacher should be able to read, follow and teach the lesson without any

make to ensure they are suitable for your students.
 Please provide scanned/PDF copies of these materials along with your lesson

this assignment, must be properly referenced in a separate Reference List at
the end of the assignment, using the APA referencing format.
